Wiltshire / Edward Cecil Barton 1896-1980

Is anyone researching/related to E C Barton, author of 'Let the Boy Win His Spurs' published 1975? I am researching his WW1 friend Tom Wilmot.

Wow! Thank you so much rosie17! Most grateful! However, having done that and actually SEEN the documents I have a further question you may be able to help me with -- what is a 'hynd', given as the occupation of a baby's father?

Scotland / viewing images on scotlandspeople

I note that another member has asked this question before, but then it resolved itself -- no such luck for me. I pay for the image but a blank screen appears. I have clicked on it, tried changing the viewer, all without success. I asked scotlandspeople and their response was basically that the fault was mine (which is probably is). What am I not doing, which is terribly obvious?

Yes I saw that -- I've ordered it through the library in the hope of saving 12!

Thank you for this, which certainly gives a vivid picture of the changes enclosure caused in this area at the end of the 18th century. I note he refers to the Featherstone book and will continue trying to find it.

I should be very glad to know if anyone has knowledge of the local history of Hartington. I haven't been able to trace a local history society (apologies if there is one, I just haven't found you!) I have Thomas Greaves who was an innkeeper at Biggin, Hartington 'Nether Quarter'. I know there is a book by Peter Featherstone on this topic which I am hoping to consult, but possibly wonderful Roots.Com can provide a short cut? There is only one pub (the Waterloo) apparently in Hartington now (I live a long way away from it) but there were four others, so Thomas could have had any of those. He only appears in the 1841 census born in 'Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts' and the dratted man has proved completely intractable to trace further. Yes, this is the sound of someone flailing around in frustration! Any Derbyshire bright sparks with any suggestions about tracing the pub at least?

Thank you both for your reassurance!
I have indeed just sent off for the death certificate. Family legend is that he cut his throat but we shall see -- perhaps he died peacefully in his bed!

London and Middlesex / suicide in twickenham

I would like to see if there was any newspaper coverage of the suicide of John Greaves Hurd, a carman who lived in Twickenham and took his own life in June 1926. I expect it's just me but I find it almost impossible to find anything through the 'British Newspapers Online' website. Any suggestions welcomed.
