Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Will Advice Please-Prior 1858
« on: Wednesday 16 May 07 22:16 BST (UK)  »
During a search of the Hampshire Record Office I found mention of a couple of Wills that could belong to my Morze family, albiet the Wills are spelt Mose or Moaze.  There are 5 Wills dating from 1719 - 1759.

I thought I would download the Will dated 1719 for Richard Mose (Moaze) of South Hayling - Yeoman.

However when I searched the National Archives for the Wills I can't seem to find any of them mentioned anywhere despite trying wildcards, just entering occupation or South Hayling.

Could anyone advise me if all Wills prior to 1858 have been deposited at the Archives and I should continue searching?

If all else fails I could order the Will from the Hampshire Record Office but it is dearer than the National Archives download and it would take a little time to get here to NZ by snail mail.

Thank you Little Nell for that snippet.  Did you mean the date to be 1837 or 1737?  Just wondered because it seems that many of the Morzes were named Richard (I bet out of the 19 burials in Hayling you mentioned, 17 of them were named Richard and named so just to test the patience of any researcher :-).

I had only been aware of 2 or 3 Morze burials in South Hayling so to be told there are so many still to search is encouraging - thanks Little Nell.

Thank you Steve and Bearkat.  I found the sites very interesting (especially after I was advised on how to look at CALM :-).

I found that Richard MORZE acquired 4 acres of land in Mengeham in 1744 (Finding No 7M55/44/17, Misc Hamp Deeds) and that he wasn't the Lord of the Manor as hoped :-).  This Richard must be the son of the Richard whose Will I found in 1737 so the family must have spent some time in the area.

Once again, thank you for your help.

Thanks for the site bearkat.  I had a look but wasn't able to find any information - perhaps I was looking at the site incorrectly.

I have recently downloaded the will of Richard MORZE dated 16 Nov 1737 wherein he mentions leaving his copyhold estate of the Manor of Hayling to his daughter Mira? (name was hard to read).

The will mentions that the manor 'is now in the occupation of Richard ANDREWS & ? STAIRES'.

Does anyone have info on Hayling Manor or know where I could find such info?

Thanks
