Family History Beginners Board / Maclean, Outer Hebrides maybe.
« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for Alexander Maclean and wife
with sons John and Angus and a female.
They lived on Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1798 census. (There were also two John Macleans)
They most likely came from South Uist
area around 1790.
Others who came  were names Walker, McDonald, MacPhee, MacCormack

It is believed they travelled with priest
Angus Maceachern (later Bishop of Pei)
whose family already settled Pei in 1772 with laird John Macdonald of Glenaladale.

Thanks
Rod

« on: Saturday 12 November 16 13:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Were there any Catholics on the Isle of Coll or Rum who emigrated to Canada?
I am looking for the father of Ronald Maclean. According to the census of Pei Ronald Maclean's father was born in Scotland. Ronald was born abt 1803.
His sister Mary married a McPhee on Pei. Thanks

Buteshire / Re: Did Angus go to Pei Canada
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 13:44 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks,
I found this Angus of Bute in a family tree for my Angus and am actually trying to find anything that would prove he is not the right man.
If I can find Angus of Bute living after 1855 in Scotland I will know there is a mistake.
I will contact the church/cemetery in Cardigan. I don't think there is a stone for her. I believe Angus died sometime before 1891, as I don't find him in the census.
He lived in lot 40 which is the next township over from Cardigan.
There is a Sarah McLean living with her nephew Neil McGillivray in Cardigan in 1891. It is likely her McGillivray family arranged  her burial.

It appears Sarah may have been born in Nova Scotia, not Scotland as indicated on the census.
There is a record of the death of Sarah McLean nee McGillivray 25 Apr 1896.
Her family seems to have come to Antigonish NS from Arisaig, Scotland in early 1800s according to family history

Family History Beginners Board / Glen Donald McDonald, Garry?
« on: Monday 21 December 15 14:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I wish to find info on a Donald or Glen Donald McDonald whose children left Scotland for Pei Canada in the late 1700s early 1800s. He was from Garry or Caledonia canal.
Children Major John, Donald known as Awgh Young, Hector and Allan and several girls whose names I don't have.
Major John McDonald was a great piper. He married a Margaret McLean . The McLeans had come to the Island around the same time as did many of the McDonalds.
Three children were born before Major came. Donald died on passage at the age of two years.
Thanks,
Rod

Buteshire / Did Angus go to Pei Canada
« on: Saturday 05 December 15 12:13 GMT (UK)  »
John McLean and Isobel Thomson married 1818
children Christian, John, James and Angus
1819, 1821, 1823 and 1826.

I'm trying to determine if this could be the same Angus who shows up on the 1881 census for Pei Canada.
The Pei Angus was married to Sarah McGillivray bef 1855 with daughter Isabella born on Pei.
thanks

1854 Donald baptised
1855 Isabella
1856 John Angus
? James Andrew no baptism found

There is a Sarah McLean Widow but she is 9 yrs older, living with her nephew Neil McGillivray in 1891 census.

Can't find much on Donald, Isabelle or James Andrew
John Angus is well documented.

Isabelle's baptism is recorded in St George's parish 18 Jul 1855
 "aged 3 months old"
(St George's is north of Georgetown)

Angus died some time after the 1881 census, but as I said earlier the Island only had church records, no certificates until abt 1906.
