Glamorganshire / Letters of Thanks?
« on: Thursday 14 March 24 11:53 GMT (UK)  »

Were letters of thanks sent from Government Ministers to the parents of men in the Services during WW1?

I found this snippet concerning my Grandparent’s Silver Wedding in The Cambrian Daily Leader (Welsh Newspaper) for the 22nd June 1918.

I’m unsure why my Grandfather would have received these letters of thanks?

« on: Saturday 09 March 24 10:10 GMT (UK)  »

Would anyone on here know if it’s possible to obtain a Crewlist for a Merchant Navy ship in 1891?

The Lady Havelock left Brest for Swansea in 1891 and docked there.

Logged onto 23andme this morning and found that the Shared Relatives facility is back!

It makes such a difference, - I can now work out many matches that I’ve been stuck with on that Site.

Armed Forces Resources / Attestation Lookup Please, 1879
« on: Tuesday 30 January 24 11:03 GMT (UK)  »

Could anyone on here do an Attestation Lookup please?

It’s for William James Wilson, born Shoreditch, who signed up in Cork in September 1879 aged 19 years and 4 months.

I’d like to check which Regiment he went to, and if he gives any details about next of kin, etc.

Cheers, Romilly.

« on: Thursday 25 January 24 18:37 GMT (UK)  »

I’m looking for a Marriage between a Mr Hobin and a Miss Cosgrove.

They had a daughter Mary Gertrude Hobin in Amounderness, Lancashire in 1937, but I can’t find her Parent’s Marriage.

Cheers, Romilly.

The Common Room / One last try!
« on: Sunday 31 December 23 18:40 GMT (UK)  »

Since I first joined this lovely Site in 2005, I’ve been trying to find my paternal grandfather (anywhere) before he married my grandmother Margaret Rees in Swansea in June 1893.

On his Marriage Certificate, he said he was William James Wilson, aged 32 years, Occupation: Painter, Father William Wilson (deceased) Occupation: Mason.

On the 1901, 1911 and 1921 Censuses he says that he was born in Manchester, Lancashire in 1860. Ages on the Censuses lead me to believe that he was born in February 1860. I have his Death Certificate, he died on the 29th December 1937, aged 77 years.

Over the years I’ve ordered multiple Birth certificates, but none have fitted. There was a William James Wilson born in Kirkby Ireleth, Lancashire in 1860, but the 1911 Census shows him still single and living at home, and so he can be ruled out.

DNA matches show that I have DNA links to the family of Richard Kean and Frances Butler, both born in Hulme, Manchester in 1832/‘33. For many years I thought that my Grandfather must have been their son Richard Kean, born Hulme 1860. However, recently purchased Death Certificates and Army records show that he was still in the military during WW1, and so cannot have been my Grandfather.

I can only assume that my Grandfather must have been using another name before he married my Grandmother in 1893, but I’m running out of ideas as to where to look next 😔

Any thoughts welcomed!

The Common Room / Solicitor’s Records?
« on: Friday 14 July 23 16:28 BST (UK)  »

I’m trying to track down whether any records remain for this firm of Solicitors.

They were Frank Thomas and Andrews, practicing in Llanfair, Swansea until at least the 1940’s.

What does happen to Solicitor’s records when they cease to practice, does anyone on here know?

Cheers, Romilly

The Common Room / Lookup please, Magazine Article,December 1897
« on: Tuesday 18 April 23 11:11 BST (UK)  »

I wonder if anyone on here could do a look up for me in this magazine please?
I think it’s covered in the British Newspaper Site.

It’s concerning my ever elusive Grandfather William James Wilson, born Manchester 1860.

I have a copy of the Patent for his Invention’The Wilson Air Purifier’, but I believe that he took out other Patents too.

I’m told that a copy of The  Engineer, (Magazine) for Dec 31 1897, mentions him in an Article regarding the of ventilation of coal mines in info gathered from Illustrated Official Journal of Patents.
Also an application for that patent. In the same magazine there is an application number 29,540 for Pumps, W.J Wilson, Birmingham.

I’m wondering if this is my Grandfather? Apart from Manchester, Swansea and London, I’ve never known of any involvement with Birmingham, but nothing would surprise me!

Cheers, Romilly.

The Common Room / Might this Record still exist?
« on: Tuesday 14 February 23 12:08 GMT (UK)  »

I've been searching for more info about my Paternal Grandfather William James Wilson (1860 - 1937) for many years now. There's no problem finding him after he married my Grandmother Margaret Rees (1866 - 1934) in Swansea in June 1893.

My Grandparents lived at Y Plas (the place) in Llangyfelach Rd, Treboeth, Swansea from 1919 - 1930.

Recently, while looking through the Welsh Newspapers Online Site, I came across this Record concerning a Poem that he had written on 'Victory' and sent to the Prime Minister, who was David Lloyd George at that time.

My query is, - might this letter/poem still exist? Do 10 Downing Street keep an Archive of this sort of thing?

Any thoughts welcomed!
Cheers, Romilly.
