London and Middlesex / Where might I find a Jewish Birth Record in Deptford in 1845?
« on: Friday 23 October 20 11:08 BST (UK)  »
Iíve never been able to find a birth record for my Great Great Grandmother Ellen Hamilton, who said (on Censuses) that she was born in Deptford in 1845.

DNA testing by older family members lead me to believe that she might have been of Sephardic Jewish origins, (Spanish, Iberian, etc).

Was there a Synagogue in that part of London, in the 1840ís?

The Common Room / Is it worth paying the unlock fee on the FTDNA Site?
« on: Wednesday 23 September 20 16:41 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone on here paid the $19 unlocking fee on the FTDNA Site at all?

I uploaded my DNA from Ancestry to that Site last year, and you can see your DNA Matches for free. However, if you want to see your Ethnicity Estimates, you have to pay the unlocking fee. Iím wondering if itís worth it...

Has anyone on here done so, - and what are your thoughts?

Cheers, Romilly.

Armed Forces / 3rd Battalion, Manchester Regiment, Militia, 1880ís, Service Records?
« on: Thursday 03 September 20 11:47 BST (UK)  »

I wonder if anyone on here might know whether any such records exist?

Iím looking for a Service Record for Richard Kean, born Hulme 1860.

His Attestation Papers are on Ancestry and FindMyPast, and show that he signed up, (for 6 years?) with The Manchester Regiment on the 17th November 1886. He was aged 22years and 10 months. Address 6 Harper Street, Manchester. Occupation: Painter.

Service Number: 2014.

Placed with the 3rd Battalion Manchester Regiment, Militia.

Iíve looked on The National Archives Site and also at Tameside Borough Councilís Site, but drawn a blank...

It might well be the case that no records still exist, but as Iím a novice at Army Records, I thought it was worth asking on here.

Cheers, Romilly.

I'm looking for a Marriage between Thomas Louis Newman and Susan Stevens in approx 1891 - 1894.

In 1891 Thomas Louis Newman is a Lodger with the Stevens family in Home Gardens,, Dartford, Kent.

At some stage he Married the landlord daughter Susan Stevens, who has a 3 year old son Arthur on the 1891 Census.

On the 1901 Census he's with Susan Newman in Home Gardens, Dartford.

However, on the 1911 he's with wife Frances Newman in Greenwich!

I can't find a Marriage for him with either wife!

Any help welcomed,

Just trying to go through some of my smaller matches on Ancestry before they disappear, - and noticed that Iíve had a sudden influx of new matches, - all at 8.9 cMs!

Very curious... Has anyone else noticed this?
