Staffordshire / Re: Beer Retailer Moxley
« on: Tuesday 29 November 05 15:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My ancestor is down in a Staffordshire Trade Directory for the 1896 as a Beer Retailer .Does this mean a person who kept  a pub or something else.

Hello Hourihane,

It could mean that he had a license to run a BeerHouse, - slightly different to a pub, because it was usually run at home, as a sideline. My Great Grandfather, William Wilson ran one in Kirkby Ireleth, Lancs. It wasn't his main occupation though, - he was also a Slate Quarrier.

Hope that helps.

Cheers, Romilly.

Hi Romily,
I think I have found the birth of your gt.gt. grandfather.
There is only one Warren's birth registered in St. Giles in the correct timescale. It is registered simply as Warren- Male
It's the March qtr of 1857 St. Giles 1b 371
Do you have any idea of his age when he died to try and narrow it down
a bit
Regards
SandyQ

Hi Sandy,

Thank you so much for that!!! (I have spent years searching for a birth entry for him:-)

According to family mythology...he committed suicide at quite an early age. I've found him on the 1901 Census, living in Manor Road, Greenwich, - when he would've been 43/44.

His son, Ernest Henry Warren, married against his wishes in 1901 & apparantly William James, (or James) Warren, disowned him.

I would imagine that 1901/'02 is probably the best bet for a death entry for William(James) Warren.

Many, many thanks for your help:-) ;D ;D ;D

Hi Sandy,

What a kind offer!

I have been trying in vain, (for years:-( to find a birth or death entry for my Great, Great Grandfather, William James Warren.

William James WARREN was born about July 1856 in the St. Giles area of Oxford, Oxfordshire, England and died after 1901. (Another name for William was James).

I've found him on the 1881 Census: Living at 62 Southam St., Nth Kensington,
with Eliza, William and Richard; and one General Servant (Clara Lambourne aged 14).
Occupation in 1881 Census & EHW's Birth Cert -  Insurance Agent

1891 Census: Living at 38 Tamworth Road, Croydon, Surrey, with Eliza, William E, Ernest Henry, Florence. Mabel, Maud, and also  Mother in Law Ann Watkins. Plus a Domestic Servant, Annie (surname illegible) aged 16. Occupation in 1891 Census Insurance ? (second word illegible)

1901 Census: Living at 37 Manor Road, Greenwich, with Eliza, Florence, Mabel, Maud and Daisy - also living at this address were William Rutly (Boarder aged 32 and single) and a General Servant (Nellie Marchant aged 19) Occupation in 1901 Census - Insurance Inspector.

Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate of my Great Grandfather, Ernest Henry Warren names his  father as William James but 1881,1891 and 1901 Census records him as James.

I've been unable to find a definate birth or death entry for William James Warren;-(
Family Chinese Whispers say that he committed suicide, (by shooting himself), - but I've found no proof of this...

Any help welcomed,

Cheers, Romilly.

Hello Arranroots & Tricia,

Many thanks for the further imput.

This one does seem to be terribly confusing!!

I had initially thought when I found him on the 1881 Census, - that all would be straightforward from then on:-(((

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hi, Romilly,
Presumably you haven't managed to find him in '61 and '71.
Where have you checked for his birth certificate?
Tricia

Hello Tricia,

I've mainly checked in Ancestry, & also Free BMD. I've found a couple of "possibles" for the 1861 Census, but no definate match. Again, no definate match on the 1871 that I can see, - there is a servant called James Warren, but his birthplace is Crowell, Oxfordshire, England, - not St. Giles, Oxford.

I am relatively new to Ancestry & so am not sure if I'm missing something obvious...

Any help welcomed, Romilly.

Occupation Interests / Re: What was a Beer House?
« on: Monday 28 November 05 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Mick,
I hope you find The Red Cow. Let us know how you get on. I don't have a name for the beer house I am looking for. I dont even know if they usually had names.
       Best wishes   Linmey.

Hi there,

I've been looking into this for a while...my Great Grandfather ran one in Kirkby Ireleth. As far as I can tell, you applied for a License & then ran them from home. Presumably word got about, & the clients would all be locals. (After all, there wouldn't be much passing trade in the 1860's, would there?).

I'd be interested to know if anyone else on here knows anything more about BeerHouses though.

Cheers, Romilly.
