Hi where is the Robert Dillon you are looking for from. My grandfather was Robert Dillon as was his grandfather.. Both from Donegal ...

Hi Dillcom,

Very interesting to hear from you, my Dillons lived in Manchester from the 1820s/30s but prior to that lived in Ireland, probably the Mayo/Galway area although I'm not 100% certain of that.

Were your Dillons in Manchester?

The Lighter Side / Re: DNA testing for family history - a warning
« on: Tuesday 29 August 17 23:23 BST (UK)  »
One thing that I would stress is that many, if not most, DNA tests for family history research do not reveal or contain medical information. In particular, the Y-DNA testing used for family history is not going to reveal medical information. Also, FTDNA, one of the main autosomal DNA testers deliberately avoid testing the parts of DNA relating to key medical information.

I don't mean to dispute what the original poster said, just to point out that many, possibly the majority of family history DNA tests do not test sections of DNA relating to key medical information.

I have taken both autosomal and Y-DNA tests and found it to be very interesting and have made genuine connections and found previously unknown links which have helped to progress my research back further.

Thanks, ChristineM and Deer243.

If anyone can confirm these transfers are still available it would be appreciated as I can pass the information on to someone else.

Off the top of my head I think that FTDNA still accept transfered results from the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. I'd get in touch with FTDNA and see what they say.

The Common Room / Re: Help Finding Francis Dillon

Thank you Heywood and Mirl that is a great find which I am quite confident is right. A year or two ago a relative mentioned that my Grandfather had a cousin with the same forename as the daughter born to the Dillon/Ball pairing and mentioned that she was a GP in Manchester. At the time I couldn't work out where this person would fit in on the tree but fortunately made a note of it. I searched the full name of this daughter and she seems to have graduated from Manchester University just before her marriage with what seems to have been a medical degree.

Mirl, could you maybe PM me the info on the child born to the 1959 marriage please, I've now seen the 1959 marriage index but can't find the right birth index.

The Common Room / Help Finding Francis Dillon
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 22:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm not much use at tracing lines down from after the 1911 census to the present day or at least getting more recent then 1911. My Great Grandfather had a half-brother (after his Father's second marriage) called Francis Dillon and I would be very interested to know if he has any descendants and basically what became of him.

Francis (also known as Frank) was born in around 1902 based on the 1911 census as I have not got his birth cert as I'm doubtful it would help trace him in more recent times. In 1911 he lived at 7, Poppythorn Lane, Prestwich, Lancashire with his parents Charles Henry Dillon and Catherine    McGovern.

If anyone could help me find any more recent records of Francis or any descendants I would be very grateful.

I do not subscribe to Ancestry and I can see all the forum posts there if that it what you are wondering?

Hi David,

I am in a similar situation in terms of having done an STR test, then Big Y but after more people with my surname to test. I posted on the Ancestry boards forum about Y-DNA testing and encouraging people to test. Ancestry forums seem to have a sub-forum for a lot of surnames, e.g. there is a Dillon sub-forum and there may well be a Christopher sub-forum. Posting there may well be worthwhile, particularly if you include a link to the Christopher/Fry DNA projects and maybe briefly explain that Y-DNA testing doesn't give away any health info and only requires a saliva sample etc just in case anyone has privacy concerns.

You could perhaps contact the Christopher/Fry project administrators to see if they would be interested in helping you with a recruitment drive.

By the way, I am R-L2 as well, although a different sub-clade to you, I am L2>BY3508>L135>BY3506.

Hope this helps!

The ethnicity estimates of autosomal DNA tests are interesting but the technology is not advanced enough yet for the estimates to be regarded as fact. The real value in autosomal testing is the ability to match with cousins.
