Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: Madeley parish records
« on: Wednesday 13 May 15 01:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello thank you for the suggestions for Matthew Thompson.   I have been looking at the census for John William Thompson and there seems to be a conflict of ages and birth places. In 1851 birth 1813 in Madely Shropshire, 1861  birth 1821 Staffordshire, 1871 birth 1818 Bilston Stafford.  his wife Elizabeth Holbrow died in Armley as a widow 1872.  The witnesses on the marriage cert are William Holbrow, Helen Niblet and a William Pye.  Matthew was a miner.ks  I'll do some more research.  Thanks Annk

Hi Ann,
I havent been able to find my Thompson ancestor Jane b 1830 Madeley in
the 1841 Census either..she just pops up in the 1851 census
by which time she had married.
Her husband died in 1868 and she later moved with the younger children to Staffordshire
and then to Cheshire to remain close to her older children.

Regarding differing details re birth being given in the Census
I'd be inclined to go with the info from the 51 Census that he was born in
Madeley Shropshire and perhaps chose to give alt details to subsequent
census takers ..perhaps just for the fun of it.. and a lot of people did that
or they simply didnt know too much about their birth details etc.

Just give it time and the pieces will hopefully fall into place

 :)  kindest regards from

I'm presumimg you have his fathers name from marriage certificate..any Thompson witnesses?

fathers occupation?

Hi Jackie,

wow I so wish I did have a marriage cert for  Matthew Thompson senior
but have relied on the IGI and info from older relatives for validation so far.

Additional website for Martha Maria  Baugh married  Matthew Thompson detail

A list of at least 6 of the children of their son also named Matthew Thompson (miner)
is also available on the IGI as follows
1.Thomas Thompson. born 1828
2.Jane Thompson 1830
3.John Randel Thompson 1832
4.Sarah Thompson 1836
5.Matthew Thompson 1836
6.Mary Anne Thompson 1838

Regarding occupations
Matthew Thompson the son was definitely a coalminer in Madeley.
his father Matthew Thompson is listed as the owner of the George and Dragon
as stated previously.
I've been doing genealogy on and off since the mid 1980s..
which doesn't make me an expert but older relatives
were living back then and were helpful with some details.

kindest regards from

I am distantly related to the Matthew Thompson of Madeley mentioned in a previous
message and post.
The older Matthew Thomspon born in 1700s was the owner of a pub George and Dragon
in Madeley till at least 1828 and they had a large family. I think his wife was Martha Maria Baugh.
I am a descendant of one of their sons and his name was Matthew Thompson and he was
a miner at Madeley.
You can find more info on the IGI with a look up for Matthew Thompson.

Martha Maria Baugh
Spouse: Mathew Thompson
Marriage: 27 Dec 1791
Madeley, Shropshire

IGI  has this
Name:    William Thomson
Gender:    Male
Christening Date:    20 May 1801
Christening Place:    Madeley, Shropshire, England
Father's Name:    Matthew Thomson
Mother's Name: Maria

I was thinking that your ancestor may be a son of the above William Thomson.
kind regards

Wendy  :)
