Hi Freya,
Michael Dowd born 21 Nov 1832, baptised at Summerhill, Co Meath was the eldest of 5 children born to Michael Dowd and Rose Kearney/Carney/Kenney/Kenny. Michael Dowd emigrated to Australia arriving on the 'Cairngorm' 19.9.1855, Portland. He married Bridget O'Keefe 1859 and they had 12 children. Michael died 1917, Hotham East Melbourne, Bridget died 1930, Prahran, Vic. I descend from his younger brother Thomas Dowd, born 6.2.1846, Dangan, Co Meath. Cheers, Donna

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: No paper trail
« on: Friday 20 May 16 00:30 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for your comments, it's much appreciated. I have just 'clicked'/understood re autosomal test on ancestry, thanks for keeping it simple.
It's worth a try, I'll go for the 37 marker at FTDNA, we may have a bit of the Irish luck and find a clue. Cheers.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / No paper trail
« on: Thursday 19 May 16 01:24 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather was a runaway. We do not have any reliable record of his parents names. There is no paper trail to follow.
My father is willing to do a DNA test, would the y chromosome test be the best place to start?
Ancestry vs Ftdna, are they essentially the same? Is the cost the difference?

The more I read the more overwhelming it all becomes.
Thanks for any advice,
Donna.

I would really appreciate any assistance with finding a marriage in 1844 of Elizabeth Evans (born 1824 Anglesey, parents William Evans and Ellen Owens) and Hugh Williams (no details).
Thank you, Donna.

Kerry / Woodlands, County Kerry
« on: Thursday 03 March 16 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering was there such a place as "Woodlands" County Kerry? One of my ancestors claimed to have been born there, but Google only recognises a camp ground and B & B.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
kind regards
