Family History Beginners Board / Wartime marriages in the Birkenhead News
« on: Wednesday 27 July 16 03:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone look up the Birkenhead News for August 1940? I have emailed Birkenhead library but have not had a reply.
I am trying to find out more information about 2 marriages which took place on the 10th August 1940. The were between my uncle, Alfred Herbert Sutton and Gladys Mary Lewis, and William Sutton who married Edith Wright (I think). The photographer was William Cull of Birkenhead, but there are no company records for this time. The current head of the company suggested the library.
I have attached a wedding photo.
Thank you

Thank you all for your suggestions and I am sorry I have not replied earlier. I am 70 years old and managed to hurt my knee - typical netball injury though I have not played netball since I was about 15. I am now off crutches but am still using a walking stick - causes all sorts of other aches and pains.

Robert Nicol Masson - he is mentioned on his mothers death certificate which finally found on Scotland's people - spelling differences. Following this I have found him living with his mother in 1911 - also on Scotland's people.

His maternal grandparents were deceased.
Have not fully tracked his paternal grandparents.

The suggestion about the two Williams in the 1881 census is probably correct. The census shows 2 Williams so maybe the error was transcription between the householders schedule form and the enumeration book. I now know a lot more about census taking. Still looking for the other entries and will follow up your other suggestions

John Masson and Elizabeth Nicol had 9 children between1855 and 1876. all of them except Robert Nicol appear in at least one census with the family, I can find most of their marriages and their deaths. the on-line trees I have seen usually have some of the siblings but not all. I started with a hand drawn tree from my father-in-law - good except he missed some of his uncles and aunts who had died in childhood. I have not tracked one (Agnes) through too many choices - she does not seem to have died in Scotland.

Robert did have a brother Alexander, but he seems to have stayed in the Montrose area. I will check again - Thank you again

Thank you.

My major source for these dates is Scotland's People. I have also used ancestry and findmypast.
His name is Robert Nicol MASSON dob 17 August 1871 at Shore Street Fraserburgh.
His parents were John Masson, Fisherman, and Elizabeth Masson m.s. Nicol. The family was living at 10 Duke Street Fraserburgh for the 1871 census (before his birth). They were at 10 Seagate, Montrose, Angus, Scotland in 1881 as Mason - no mention of Robert. not found in census between 1881 and 1911.

His death is recorded at 22 December 1952 at 71 Castle Street Montrose. Cause of death shown as myocardial degeneration, chronic bronchitis. He is shown as a retired dock labourer, unmarried.  Informant shown as W Masson (William Young Masson), his brother - address given is same as on his death registration of 1955.
is this of any help?

Thank you again

I am trying to track someone in Scotland - I have his birth (1871) and his death (1952) but I cannot find him anywhere in between. he does not appear on any census with the rest of his family. can I find out if he was in an institution?
