Denbighshire / Furmston's of Chirk, which one is right?
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 10:46 BST (UK)  »
Mods, I hope this is in the right place, if not feel free to move it.

Sarah Ann Furmston married Arthur Prentice in 1902 in Birmingham. I have the marriage certificate.

After the marriage I have census for 1911, various Birmingham electoral rolls, re-marriage and death index. In most of these documents Sara Ann is referred to as "Annie".

Here is my problem..........

Sarah Ann's father on the marriage cert is William Furmston (and she is listed as age 22), and her place of birth in all later documents is abt. 1880, Chirk, Denbighshire.

I have found a baptism record that I though was correct for Annie Furmston, born 27/04/1880 and Baptized 30/05/1880 in Chirk, Father William, mother's first name Ellen, BUT there is also a baptism for Sarah Anne Furmston, born 28/10/1875 and baptized 12/11/1875 in Chirk, Father William and mother Ellen.

I have a marriage for William Furmston and Ellen Elizabeth Povey 15/02/1873 in Chirk.

So my question is did Arthur marry Annie or Sarah Ann, was she confused about who she was, are those the correct parents?

What do you all think?

I too have really enjoyed this thread.

Jane - sorry about the earlier incorrect assumptions and glad you are feeling better about the debate! Thats the spirit!

I have also had a bit of a rethink, and have renamed my first tree so that it is very obvious in ancestry searches that it should not be taken at face value.
If anyone does copy and use it it's their loss.

I also double checked the settings on my private tree. It does come up in searches with a message that the tree is private but I can be contacted. If anyone is then serious about the information and contacts me I will share, but probably not actual copies of documents I have paid for untill much further down the line. I would be happy to tell them info on those documents though so they can be sure it is correct and then order there own if they like.

Jettejjane I am sorry if anything I said upset you. I certainly was not offended by your view in any way, just trying to maybe explain a differenet point of view. Some people will not agree with it and some will, and others will understand it without agreeing. That is human nature.

Forgive me if I am totally off base here but I get the feeling you are not a very experienced computer/internet user? One of the problems with communicating in the virtual world rather than face to face (and even the telephone) is that you can't pick up all the little nuances of body language, facial expression and tone of voice when reading the written word. Thus it makes mis understandings more likely.

I myself have a very thick skin, appreciate everyones right to their own opinion, and enjoy a lively debate, but I know not everyone is quite so robust!

It does help though, as you said above to take a breath or two and a step back before becoming too upset. This is a lovely forum and I personally have not detected a hint of nastyness on here (mabye a few "straight to the point" comments here and there, but nothing deliberately nasty). Sometimes if you try to assume people are always being nice it helps!

I can see both points of view.

When I first started I got the 14 day free trial to Ancestry and spent that 14 days downloading as much info as I possibly could without checking any of it. It makes me a little ashamed therefore to admit I have a completely unverified and most probably horrifically innacurate public tree that goes right back on one line to Charlamaine!

I then started properly and am doing it the right way, but that unchecked tree has given me some hints when I got a bit stuck, if only to rule out a person.

It did kind of bug me a little that my grandmothers date of death is out by about 50 years on several trees, including one that belongs to the sister of a relation who really should know better as she was with me at the funeral! But it is up to them what they put and whether they care about the accuracy.

Or, maybe they are doing the same thing I did?

My correct tree is private because there is a lot of personal info on it, but I would be willing to share if anyone asked. especially since everyone on here has been so generous with there time in helping me. Without that I would have been stuck, so if I can help someone else I will.

Thanks Suzard

I didn't think about the "process of elimination" to narrow down the possible choices. I can then add a "most likely to have lived in x or Y"

Perfect, now to put it into effect! (well not right now, perhaps after work would be better!)

Thanks Both

I can see that perhaps in a small village they may not have thought they needed an actual address. Its a shame they werent more considereate of future researchers!

Kay, I had seen the first page thanks, I just wish they had thought to put them next to the actual names!

How much did people move around within a village, not much I suppose. There is either a Shrewley Road or Shrewley Hill mentioned on the 1881 so I will just go with that (with a note that it is unconfirmed)

Hi All

I have located an 1891 census entry for my ancestors, but there are no address details. I have been back through all the pages and there is no address on any of them.

The Ref no is RG12/2467 and I am particulary interested in the Hannis family.

Can anyone help me with this? Or is it a lost cause.

Did this happen very often (that address details were missed off the census)?

Thanks everyone for the interesting discussion. It is great to hear differing views. It seems as if those relatives don't want to be ignored anyway. In spite of my plan, of course every north or marriage record has a parent name, every cennsus record has children etc, so they are finding there way on thete!

ETA Apologies for the awful spelling, I posted this from my phone!
