Occupation Interests / Re: Journeyman Carpenter
« on: Monday 14 November 05 13:12 GMT (UK)  »
Thankyou for your replies, he was born in Islington, London.  I can't say he was brought up there as I've been unable to find him in 1891 or 1901 census, so I've no idea where he went.  But he was married in 1912 at St. Pancras, London, so I'm assuming he stayed around the London area.   From 1887 to 1912 I can't find him anywhere!      :-\
Could you tell me if any of the records you speak of would be 'on line'   I live in Australia, so a little bit difficult to pop down to the local records office        :)

Would there be such a thing as a register for apprentice carpenters??   If there was, how would I find out about it?   Would there be details of parentage of apprentice?  Trying to find out about my Grandfather (born 1887) who was a Journeyman Carpenter in his early years, went on to be a master carpenter making ornamental pews, friezes and gargoyles for churches plus very fancy and ornate furniture for houses.

Searching for Louisa Elizabeth Only from Islington.   Mother of Ernest Abbott Onley born 10/10/1887 Islington.   I can't find where she came from, and I've no idea where she went.   Neither of them show up on any of the censuses.

It's called The New World Order and it's been going on for years right under our noses and it's only now people are beginning to recognise just exactly what's happening  to our rights and freedoms.

Even one of our prime ministers .....'fondly' refered to by the UK press as "The Lizard of Oz"   for his indiscretion with the Queen, wanted us to be a "........Banana Republic"   And he very nearly got his way.

The political catchcry seems to be "Let's abolish everything which makes the individual an individual, makes him proud to be British (or Australian, Canadian, Kiwi etc) and leaves him incapable of forming  a personal opinion.

Animal Farm.......we're living in it!!!

Thanks for that site Annie, but it seems to be about locomotives rather than industrial boilers.   I'll send them an e-mail anyway, you just never know.
It's a real shame Mary Anne didn't keep the letter, I only know about it from Nellie, my Grandmother, who told my Aunt, her daughter all about it........oooooh, just read that back and it sounds a bit complicated doesn't it?
Meanwhile, I'll get back to my Aunt (aged 93)and see if she remembers which firm in Bolton he worked for, poor thing  - on a  very good day she can remember her name      :)

You've got them, Mary Anne and her family went to live with her parents for a while, then she moved into a one room place with the girls.   She eventually moved into a small house and called the front room a 'pub'   From this she met her second husband  Fred Unwin.
As far as we know, Robert wasn't in the Armed Service just a common or garden boilermaker who went on contract work to Russia.  Unfortunately, we don't know what city in Russia he went to, but it was "....One of the big ones"
All we know is that it was coming on to winter when he disappeard, but not yet the bitter cold it can get.   Mary Anne got a letter from one of his workmates to say he'd vanished and they were searching for him,  but with no other explanation.   She didn't even get anything from the firm he worked for.
I'd love to know what happened, but I don't think I've got much chance of finding out.

I love a good mystery like the next person, but this has got me stumped!          ::)

Unfortunately it's us who are allowing the PC brigade to continue doing what the are.....which is slowly but surely eroding the rights of individuals to be just that.....individual.    We'll all have a little rant and rave about the 'Piggy' banks or the flag badges or Christmas carols, but let's be honest, something else comes up next week and we'll all have forgotten our outrage at the loss of the humble piggy bank..... me included!!
We complain to each other and to forums like this, but do we complain loud enough or perhaps long enough to the powers that be who sit in thier little towers thinking of which/why/what we can eliminate today.   It needs for everyone who is sick and tired of the mumbo jumbo PC to complain all at once to the ministers and newspapers to stop the political correctness once and for all and just let us all get on with the job of living.   Death to the Nanny State and his second  cousin Political Correctness!!        ;)

The Common Room / From Russia with .........
« on: Saturday 12 November 05 15:52 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather Robert Kitchen born Birkenhead, 1868 Married Mary Anne Parker born Bolton, 1867.   Robert was a boilermaker and went over to Russia  in 1899/1900 with a group of men from Bolton to work.
Robert went out to the front of the shared sleeping quarters one night for a cigarette......and vanished, never to be seen or heard from again.
Mary Anne was left in the predicament of having four small girls, the youngest less than 12 months old and no means of support.  She also couldn't marry again as there was no proof of Roberts death.
Repeated requests to Russians for help with search brought no response.
What happened to Robert?   Nobody knows or nobody's telling!!
Anyone else got a mystery disappearance in the family?

The PC brigade is at it again,  this time museum bosses are attempting to erase Christ from history by removing BC - Before Christ - and using BP - Before Present in it's place.  This is supposedly to avoid offending other faiths.  For crying out loud, isn't it about time somebody shouted ENOUGH with the political correctness???
