Hi Jorose
Thanks for the information regarding the map, I'll get onto that right away.  I had seen the description about Edinburgh Cottages from Charles Booth, quite dismal sounding isn't it!!  (I love his writings, so descriptive) How on earth they came up with cottage's is a mystery!  I don't think I would have liked to live there.
Thanks again

In the September edition of 'Your Family History' magazine, page 10......."GRO India furore"   'Plans by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) to outsource transcripton of over 250 million birth, marriage and death records to India have been heavily criticised'

Records dating back to 1837 are to be transcribed by employees of Siemens in Chennai, India.  This is going to make finding family even more difficult......... and no, I'm not racist, just realistic when it comes to  English documents  being transcribed by a non English speaking peaple.  Complain to GRO and your local MP, send a letter, whinge and female dog.......make sure the records stay in UK.

Hi Meliora
I'd noticed the birth of Louisa, but honesty hadn't paid much attention to it as none of the family had mentioned a twin........!!!  It was said he had an adopted sister who died, but nothing is known of her at all.
The birth certificate has no time of birth, just Tenth October, is it back to square one??   Unfortunately Ernest was a very secretive man who made very little of his family history known.   The fact he was also known under different names (Frederick Onley, Frederick Only, Ernest Only and Fred Blunt) makes things even more difficult.
What we do know is he lived with his real parents until he was sent away to boarding school, prior to this he and his adopted sister (name unknown)  had private tutors.
His marriage certificate (1912) had Ernest Onley for his father, but this was amended in 1950 to omit the, back to the drawing board.
This is more than a little frustrating  ;)

Could anyone help me with a baptism record for Ernest Abbott Onley - born Islington November 10, 1887 to Louisa Elizabeth Onley (machinist).  No father on birth certificate.   Home address 28 Edinburgh Cottages, Islington.   I can't find Ernest or Louisa in 1891 or 1901 census or anywhere else for that matter!   ???
He lived with his parents - father and mother - Louisa until he was sent away to boarding school from where he ran away aged about 13.
Ernest's father was supposedly an history says his family were quite well off and his parents adopted a daughter who was slightly older than Ernest but she died around age 14.
If anyone could help me with this it would be great.
