Europe / USA: Walter Swallow assistance please
« on: Tuesday 23 December 08 07:04 GMT (UK)  »
Walter Swallow went to New York as a single man in 1904.  He went again in 1907, but this time as a married man with his wife Ellen Swallow -- by then they were living in 3rd Avenue New York (from the Ellis Island site).  I am not sure I can find a marriage for him in England, and in 1907 they had both been in the US before for several years.  Can anyone tell me if he arrived in Britain with a wife?  I imagine he was just visiting, and may well have come in 1907.
thanks

US Lookup Requests / Swallow family
« on: Tuesday 09 October 07 08:35 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather's aunt, Julia Swallow (1892-) went to the US, arriving on the St Louis on 20 September 1913 from Southampton.  We think she lived in New York, she gave her destination as W.A.Swallow of 1274 Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn.  She had a brother Walter (1881- ) and a Walter Swallow arrived at Ellis Island on the Arabic from Liverpool on 16 December 1907 with his wife.  Another brother, Frank (1888- ) moved to New York in 1912.  Then they all seemed to disappear.  Julie visited her nephew (my grandfather) up until 1952.  I assume she married, but don't know how to find a marriage in New York.  I tried writing to all the Swallows in the current New York phonebook, but no replies.  Any assistance or direction gratefully received.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / burial index lookup please
« on: Monday 09 April 07 10:08 BST (UK)  »
There is a Sarah E Guy in the death index for September quarter of 1915 (St Giles 1b 524).  She is the right age for my great grandmother (59) and there is no clear evidence of her death otherwise.  Great Grandfather took another wife about 1903, but there is no record of their marriage.  Would the burial index tell me any more details about her, and where she is buried (Great grandfather buried with second wife in Brompton cemetery)?  She lived in the Islington-Holborn area when married, so the place is about right.  Could someone look up the Burial index for me please and let me know if there is anything useful?

Europe / Catherine Probert from India
« on: Saturday 23 September 06 07:57 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother, Catherine Margaret Probert, was born in 1883 on a boat going to India.  Her father was a sailor, William Probert,  and her mother died giving birth to Catherine.  This is the family story, anyway, so far not supported by bits of paper.  Little Catherine supposedly continued on to India, and at some time returned to England, where she does not seem to have married husband number 1, but produced a bevy of children from about 1907 on in the Herts/Cambridge/Essex area.  The woman seems to have been very nervous of paperwork, but was a good catholic woman, although requests have met with mixed results
thanks for any clues

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / more information please Guy/Trigg 1916
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 07:11 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the marriage of my grandfather, Arthur Ernest Guy.  I don't know the name of the lady he married (she wasnt my grandmother) but the family story goes that he abandoned a wife and 2 sons in Gloucestershire and lived with my grandmother.  He was born in 1891 in London, father Frederick Guy, mother Sarah Ellen (nee Rouse).  The marriage I have found was to Priscilla P Trigg, Gloucester 6a 677.  Can I find out his father's name without getting the  certificate (already have certificates for the wrong Arthur Guy), and can I tell if there were 2 sons without trawling through the birth indexes, especially as i dont know names.
thanks

I am hunting Sarah Ellen Rouse, who married my great grandfather Frederick Guy on Christmas Day 1884 in Marylebone.  In 1891 they are living in London under the name Guy, but by 1901 they are living in Savoy Street under the name Rouse -- the whole family.  In 1904 Frederick has "married" Rachel Spinks and has the first of 4 children (also called Rouse) that they had.  But we can't find any record of Sarah's death between 1901 and 1904.  She didn't go back to Stoke by Nayland, where her grandparents had lived, she doesnt seem to be buried there.  I wonder what happened to her sister Louisa Sophia Rouse (born c. 1855).  There is a Sarah Guy in the death index for 1906 in Uckfield, Sussex.  The age is right.  I am wondering if she went to Louisa (did Louisa marry?) or if Hannah and Henry (her parents) are in Sussex.  If someone is interested, could they possibly do a couple of lookups for me. Sorry it is a long story.

Suffolk / Stoke by Nayland churchyard
« on: Sunday 12 March 06 06:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for my great grandmother, Sarah Ellen Rouse.  Although she married my great grandfather, Frederick Guy, in the 1901 census they are under the name of Rouse, and they seemed to use either.  By 1904 Frederick is having children with another woman (can't find a marriage record) but Sarah doesnt seem to have died, either named Rouse or Guy.  My mother seems to think she went back to her family -- they farmed in Stoke by Nayland, and there are a lot of them buried at St Mary's there.  I wonder if she is there, and if anyone nearby could have a look for her.  Thanks enormously

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / William Probert born Cardiff c.1855
« on: Thursday 09 February 06 09:24 GMT (UK)  »
Family story says my great grandmother, Katherine Margaret Probert, was born on a boat going to India in 1881, and her mother (name unknown) died in childbirth.  Katherine's father, William Probert, was a chef on the boat and was born in Cardiff.  Katherine died in 1962 in Hertfordshire where she had raised her children.  She may have been married to a man called Charles Price or Charles Grey, but later married a Mr Andrews.  Katherine was a bit of a mystery woman, and William Proberts abound in Wales.  I have looked where I can think of, can anyone please offer some suggestions.
thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1901 census Belshaw in Oldham
« on: Monday 06 February 06 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone with access to the 1901 census please do a look up for me.  I would like to know about the family of Mary Elizabeth Belshaw of Oldham in 1901.  Mary was born in 1889, so would be 11 or so in the census.
thanks
