London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Births and Deaths at sea at Kew
« on: Tuesday 31 January 06 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone is going to the national archives at Kew, I wonder if they could be very kind and look up a birth at sea in 1881 for Katherine Margaret Probert, daughter of William Probert, and the death of her mother (name unknown) in childbirth.  They were on a boat going to India, but I don't know the name of the boat either.  The file in the archives is BT 158:  Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages of passengers at sea 1854-1890, it is in microform only.  I am assuming that I can't get a copy from the archives, perhaps someone could tell me if/how
thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / NBI Sarah Ellen Guy/Rouse c.1902
« on: Sunday 08 January 06 02:24 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother, born Sarah Ellen Rouse in Poplar in c.1856 married Frederick William Guy in Marylebone on Christmas Day 1884.  In 1891 they are in the census with their children under the name of Guy, but in 1901 they are in the census under the name Rouse in Savoy Street, Savoy.  There were a lot of males who died, and apparently they wanted to keep the name going.
I have been looking for Sarah's death, without success.  I do have a certificate for a Sarah Guy who died in Whitechapel, but that is not her.  Frederick had a new wife and a new family (interestingly called Rouse) from 1904, and Sarah is still alive in 1901.  We think she must have died in the meantime.  Her family came from Stoke by Nayland in Suffolk and the churchyard of St Mary's seems to be full of Rouses, but I am not sure if she may be buried there under the name Guy.  Otherwise she is probably buried in London, under either name.  Frederick is buried in Brompton cemetery, but Sarah does not appear to be in the same grave -- mind you he lived until 1953.
Would someone be so kind as to look and see if they can find Sarah's final resting place.
thank you

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / 1871 census, Henry ROUSE
« on: Wednesday 28 December 05 05:31 GMT (UK)  »
Would someone be kind enough to look up Henry and Hannah Rouse in the Suffolk census for me please.  I have them in 1881 aged 56 and 60 (there's something about older women in my family!) living on their own in 7 Blenheim Terrace in London, but he was born in Stoke and Hannah was born in Guildford, Surrey.  Family history says he farmed at Stoke, and that there was a brother that died, but although I know they had a daughter Sarah Ellen, don't know of any other children.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Joseph HATWELL of Portsmouth
« on: Sunday 11 December 05 09:31 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph Hatwell came to Adelaide in 1839 on the Resource, and married straight away a young lady named Elizabeth Floate that he met on the boat, a ship board romance!  She came with her parents, but Joseph was born in 1812 and was travelling alone.  He said on the shipping records that he as from Portsmouth, but of course it is before birth indexes, and although I have looked for him, so far without success. Could someone with more expertise have a bit of a dig for me please?

Roxburghshire / Agnes FRASER of Morebattle, 1861 census
« on: Sunday 11 December 05 08:28 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for Agnes Fraser, I have is a copy of the marriage registration in Hamilton, Victoria, Australia when she married John Roger Stewart on 27th December 1872 when Agnes was 28.  It gives her birth place as Morebattle, and I know that her parents were Archibald Fraser and Ellen Dalgleish.  Would someone be kind enough to look in the 1861 census and see if they can see a family that meets this description.
thanks

« on: Friday 09 December 05 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
would someone be kind enough to look up the 1861 sensus for William Baptist Williams who would be 17 in the census.  William was born in Lambeth, and at became a stall holder at Covent Garden so was perhaps living around that area.  It is a very common name, hopefully someone can spot him.

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / PROBERT William 1891 census
« on: Saturday 03 December 05 01:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for my great grandmother, Katherine Margaret Probert who was reportedly born on a boat going to India in 1881.  Her father was William Probert from Cardiff and her mother died giving birth.  Somewhere along the line Katherine Margaret married a man called Charles Grey, although her children were all called Price, and she died in Hertfordshire in 1962.  Could someone please have a look in the 1891 census to see if there is any sign of William and Katherine Probert in Herts.  She was living in Bishops Stortford at the time of her death, with her daughter, and she had married a Henry Andrews in the meantime.  They are proving very elusive.
thanks
