Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1901 census Belshaw in Oldham
« on: Monday 06 February 06 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone with access to the 1901 census please do a look up for me.  I would like to know about the family of Mary Elizabeth Belshaw of Oldham in 1901.  Mary was born in 1889, so would be 11 or so in the census.
thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Births and Deaths at sea at Kew
« on: Tuesday 31 January 06 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone is going to the national archives at Kew, I wonder if they could be very kind and look up a birth at sea in 1881 for Katherine Margaret Probert, daughter of William Probert, and the death of her mother (name unknown) in childbirth.  They were on a boat going to India, but I don't know the name of the boat either.  The file in the archives is BT 158:  Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages of passengers at sea 1854-1890, it is in microform only.  I am assuming that I can't get a copy from the archives, perhaps someone could tell me if/how
thanks

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / NBI Sarah Ellen Guy/Rouse c.1902
« on: Sunday 08 January 06 02:24 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother, born Sarah Ellen Rouse in Poplar in c.1856 married Frederick William Guy in Marylebone on Christmas Day 1884.  In 1891 they are in the census with their children under the name of Guy, but in 1901 they are in the census under the name Rouse in Savoy Street, Savoy.  There were a lot of males who died, and apparently they wanted to keep the name going.
I have been looking for Sarah's death, without success.  I do have a certificate for a Sarah Guy who died in Whitechapel, but that is not her.  Frederick had a new wife and a new family (interestingly called Rouse) from 1904, and Sarah is still alive in 1901.  We think she must have died in the meantime.  Her family came from Stoke by Nayland in Suffolk and the churchyard of St Mary's seems to be full of Rouses, but I am not sure if she may be buried there under the name Guy.  Otherwise she is probably buried in London, under either name.  Frederick is buried in Brompton cemetery, but Sarah does not appear to be in the same grave -- mind you he lived until 1953.
Would someone be so kind as to look and see if they can find Sarah's final resting place.
thank you
Diane

Dave, what a marvel you are.  I have been away for a few days and come back to this, how excellent. I will trawl through it at leisure -- my brain is a slow model, but churns away -- and make sense of it.  Thank you once again

I think i have it (maybe).  It looks like Henry Rouse snr had a farm in Stoke by Nayland, and he was a widower with 3 boys, my Henry the oldest, then Edward and William.  The boys went out to work fairly early in life, as you would expect.
In 1851 Henry snr is still on the farm with only the youngest, William, still at home.
In 1861 Henry is on the farm on his own.  Henry and Hannah are in London with their girls (and a couple of lodgers to help pay the bills).
In 1871 Henry snr has probably died, and Henry and Hannah have gone back to sort out the farm, and sell it probably.  The girls have stayed in London.
In 1881 Henry and Hannah are back in London.  Sarah didnt marry until 1884, but I cant find her in 1881 or in 1871.  Louisa disappears after the 1861 census for me, havent looked in deaths, maybe that is what happened, or maybe she married, cant find her in bmd.
thanks again
Diane
