They are the family Scottish family has been easy.

The Irish Protestants are impossible the Catholics are better because the catholic church has great records,so they can be traced back to 1800 before that in Ireland I haven't tried.

The one member who came to Quebec city from England in 1850.

Wow just Wow,so glad I stumbled upon this topic,I too have been searching the 1841 Census,of Ardwick,Manchester.

My 2nd great grandmother Ann Foden nee Barber is listed as 25yrs.old .

Her sister Elizabeth  Hallas nee Barber is also recorded as 25yrs.old.

I thought they were twins.

There are a number of Barber on the page but no indication if they are related or in what way.

I had to search the Hallas to find out the girls were sisters.

I believe his enlistment age was 13.5 ...

The photo is MIA as the person who had the photo is deceased,I have inquired to some members but to know avail.

He would have been 2nd great-grandfather of my children.

There was also a 2nd. great-grandparents from the maternal side who was born in Scotland and married a girl from Irish one catholic, one protestant who also had to obtain a licence,so it would appear a licence was necessary in a number of situations.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask,so forgive my ignorance.

My children are looking for Henry King born 1831-32,they have managed to learn everything about his life in Canada but can not go further back because they can not find parents names or place of birth.

The only clue here is that their was a photo taken of him in Army Uniform. it is the Royal Artillery and he would have come to Canada in 1850-51.He is in 1852 Census of Canada as a servant to Edward Bowen who I think was an Officer in the British Army.

Any advise would be appreciated .

I have found John Foden in 1841 census his wife is Ann NEE Barber there is  Transcription John is recorded as Toden  Ann 's nee is Barber.

It has been long and arduous finding maiden for Ann,the 1851 Census page is decayed but in 1847 St.Gilles Church John and Anne Baptized two children Mary Jane born in 1841 and William born in 1846.

They are still living on Bridge St.

I found Mary Jane in 1861 Census living with Abraham Hallas and Elizabeth she is recorded as their niece..I then found Marriage of Abraham and Elizabeth Barber.

In 1841 Census the Hallas family of Abraham and Elizabeth are living next door to John and Ann Foden.Mary Jane is listed only as Jane 3 mo.old.I fits with the birth recorded on Certificate of Baptizam.

Finally I found the marriage of William and his witness is Ralph Hallas, one of Elizabeth and Abraham's sons.

In all of this hunt one thing remains constant all are born in Ardwick.

I hope some kind soul with knowledge I do not posses will help me out.I have been trying to research my Grandmother's family.

Grandma Alice was born Alice Ann Horrobin born Bradford,Manchester, this I have taken from her immigration form to Canada.Alice Ann was born 1877,this information was taken from England Census
Manchester 1911.This is the last Census she appears in with my Grandfather Harry Howarth who she married in 1900,it also gives her father as John deceased.

I found John Horrobin and his family in 1890  England Census of Manchester.

I found John Horrobin married Mary Jane Foden in 1864,Anglican Cathedral,Manchester it gives her father as John, she is born 1841 Ardwick,Manchester.Ardwick gives her Mother as Barbas.

I have not been able to find a marriage certificate for John Foden and Ann Barbas.
Is it impossible to find anything on line for the years prior to 1840.

I know Census only started 1841.

I am frustrated! So if anyone can tell me where else to look I will be forever grateful.

The Family History Library on-line shows John Foden and Ann Barbas as the parents on Mary Jane Foden in 1841.
There are no Census prior to 1841.

In 1841, John, Ann and Jane Foden are living next door to Abraham Hallas, Isobell21

Heather

In 1861 census Mary Jane is with Abraham Hallas and the census info. indicates she is his niece but FHL shows Mary Jane born 1841 in Ardwick and her mother's name is given as Ann Barbas,so is Abraham Hallas related to John Foden and not to Ann Barbas.
I am so confused.

1841 Living at Stone Street, Manchester-  All born Lancashire.  Looks like his father was a Joseph

Joseph Horrobin 30 Dresser
Ann    Horrobin    25
Richard Horrobin 0

This cold be as John was b.1842,there is also a marriage between Richard and I think Ann,in 1866 and his Father is also given as Joseph, John signs as a wittness.

It still leaves me w/o a nee name for his mother but I am sure this is his family.

Thank you I will continue looking.
