Warwickshire / Arthur Short Warwick 1940s
« on: Monday 30 January 17 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for any information on a man named Arthur Short.

Here's what I know about him:
-married Kitty Taylor (b.1898, d.1931) in the September quarter of 1925
-had a son, John Reuben Short, born 27 Dec 1925 in Warwick
- had a daughter, Mary Short, born June 1928 in Warwick
- had one more daughter born in 1930

Kitty Taylor died in 1931 of a perforated bladder. Arthur Short could not look after his 3 children so he sent his youngest to live with Maggie Dunn nee Taylor (sister of Kitty Taylor and my great-grandmother). Eventually he sent his two older children to live with other sisters of Kitty. Mary went to live with Edith Ethel Toombs nee Taylor. John went to live with Lizzie "Mollie" "Betty" Taylor (married name possibly Welch).

When the youngest daughter was about 9, Arthur Short came around again and wanted to get her back. Maggie won the custody battle.

Arthur Short lived on the corner of Theatre Street and Linen Street in Warwick. He lived with or was married to a Violet Simpson. It's unknown if they were married or just living together.

Any information on this man would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Worcestershire / George Henry BROOKS MMN NOKE
« on: Monday 23 January 17 20:40 GMT (UK)  »
I'm wondering if anyone is researching the Brooks family and if anyone has come across a Brooks/Noke union.

I found a birth record on the GRO for George Henry BROOKS b. APR-MAY-JUN 1884 in Stourbridge, MMN NOKE.

I haven't been able to find a marriage between a Brooks and Noke. My Great-Grandfather was born George Harry Brooks Dunn on 28 Aug 1883 or 1884 in Wollescote, Worcestershire. There were rumours that he had been adopted within the family. This is a real stretch but I'd like to be able to rule out any birth records that could possibly be him.

Thanks,

Melody

Warwickshire / 36 Brook Cottages, Warwick
« on: Tuesday 27 December 16 23:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Does anyone know anything about the address 36 Brook Cottages in Warwick?  I found the address on my great grandparents marriage certificate in 1915. I've tried to Google it to see it on a map but it doesn't come up. I was hoping someone who knows the area could help me with a bit of the history of it.

Thanks!

Worcestershire / Wollescote or Lye Burials
« on: Tuesday 27 December 16 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I can find out where someone was buried?

I'm looking for the burial of Elizabeth Brooks née Pardoe. Died January 1892 in Wollescote. I believe she lived at Brookland Villa. She may have been buried with her husband, Samuel Brooks, died 1861 or 1862. They had a son, John, who I believe died young as he was born in 1845 and I cannot find him in the 1851 census.

Thanks!

England / Newspaper Question 1928
« on: Thursday 22 December 16 14:42 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm wondering about a possible newspaper article. I received a Death Certificate that might belong to my 2nd great grandmother, Betsy Dunn nee Brooks. The certificate said she died 23 Feb 1928 in Kingswinford, Staffordshire. She died from shock when her clothes got fire from her kitchen grate and burned her left arm, side, and leg. She had been living at 16 KING Street in Wollescote. She died at Stream Street (?) which I believe is where the Stourbridge hospital was or is. I'm not from England so I don't know the area. I was thinking and hoping there might be a newspaper article written about the incident. I've had no luck with researching the newspapers as I'm still getting used to using all the resources aside from Ancestry.

Any direction or tips would be greatly appreciated.

The Common Room / Ordering a Will
« on: Thursday 22 December 16 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone ever ordered a Will of an ancestor? I'm just wondering what kind of information I could get out of one. From the Probate Search website I can see the one I want. It gives her name, address, date of death, the Probate date and who the Probate goes to and how much money. I don't want to order it if I won't get much more information than that.

Thanks!

The Common Room / Stock Taker vs Labourer
« on: Friday 16 December 16 18:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm wondering about how my ancestors described their occupations on the census vs their marriage licenses.

My 3rd great grandfather was called a Labourer on his marriage certificate and an Iron Labourer on the census.
When 3 of his sons married, they put his occupation as Stock Taker.

Would an iron worker and stock taker somehow be related? They lived in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire and from what I've read about the area in those days most people in the iron works were quite poor. However in the 1841 census they have a servant. I would guess someone with a  servant couldn't be too poor. Unless servant had another meaning then too.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Worcestershire / Betsy Dunn Death
« on: Friday 02 December 16 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I've hit a brick wall with my great great grandparents, Edwin Dunn (b. 1850 Kingswinford, Staff.) and Betsy Dunn nee Brooks (b. 1849 Lye, Worc.). Edwin seems to disappear after about 1892. Betsy lists herself as a widow in the 1901 and 1911 census. I cannot find a death record for Edwin.

I ordered a death certificate for a Betsy Dunn who died at age 79 in February of 1928. The information says she died 23 February 1928  at Stream Road, Wordsley, Kingswinford. Other information included she was of 16 King Street, Wollescote, Worc. Widow of Edward Dunn (Ironplate Worker). She died due to shock from being burned on her right side, right arm, and right leg from her kitchen grate.

At first I dismissed this record because the record said she lived died in Kingswinford and was the widow of Edward Dunn.  Now I'm starting to wonder if she is my Betsy Dunn. My Betsy lived in Wollescote in the 1881, 1891, 1901, and 1911 Census. Her husband was Edwin Dunn and he was a bucket maker (1881 census and various Directories) as well as a galvanizer (specializing mostly in buckets). On their son's (George Harry Dunn) marriage record (1915) he lists Edwin was a Sheet Iron Worker (Master). The death was registered by the coroner and not a family member. I'm wondering if maybe they got her husband's name wrong and wrote him down as Edward instead of Edwin. Is that too much of a stretch? Part of me wonders if I'm so desperate for a little bit of information that I'm starting to grasp at straws.

Would someone be able to track down a marriage between a Betsy and an Edward Dunn? I have the marriage certificate for Edwin Dunn and Betsy Brooks. They married in 1872 in Bromsgrove.

**Edit: A marriage or anything in a Census to show an Edward Dunn married to a Betsy. Thanks!**

Any help would be so great. Thanks!

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Marriage Look Up
« on: Friday 18 November 16 01:49 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for a marriage between William Dunn and Sarah Whittaker. It apparently took place 1803 on Halesowen. On almost every family tree I've come across people have William married to Sarah Whittaker.  However I haven't been able to find anything to prove it. I know William did marry a Sarah but I can't figure out her maiden name.

Thanks!
