London and Middlesex / Looking for Annie Stuart Prickett
« on: Friday 09 August 19 02:52 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find more information on Annie Stuart Prickett. I believe she was born about 1861 in London. She married American captain Charles Edward Lewis in or around 1876 and had a son Percy Wyndham Lewis in 1882.
I have found her on the 1881, 1901, and 1911 Censuses as well as her death but I can't find anything about her before she was married.
According to the censuses her mother was Annie Prickett possible maiden name is Gooderson. I think her father might have been Giles Prickett.
I'm curious to find out more about the Stuart in her name.

Surrey Lookup Requests / North Surrey District School, Penge
« on: Sunday 09 June 19 13:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm looking for an admission and/or discharge record for a Henry Stuart. On the 1871 census he is at the school and I believe he might be my great-grandad's half brother.

There was a Henry Stuart born 5 Aug 1862 at Woodhatch in Reigate to parents Henry Benson and Julia. I don't believe they were married as Henry Benson was married to Isabella Louise Carter at that time.

On the 1871 Census there is a Henry Stuart born about 1863 at the school and I would love to know if that's the same Henry Stuart.

I've tried looking online for records but haven't had much luck. I'm in Canada so I can't get to any of the archives.

Bedfordshire / 28 John Street, LUTON
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 12:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some information on the address 28 John Street in Luton.

I have a pdf of a birth certificate that gives 28 John Street as the address in 1883. I've searched it on the censuses of 1881 and 1891 but it doesn't appear. Then I've found it in a newspaper article as being a place of business.

I'm not from the area so I have no idea about it but it seems odd that it was listed as a residence.

Thanks in advance.

Antrim / James Stuart CB of Gracehill
« on: Wednesday 29 May 19 21:12 BST (UK)  »
I'm working on my newly found Stuart ancestors and I need some help with James Stuart. It's a common name but he had some special titles and I just want to make sure I have the correct man and am not mixing him up with another man of the same name. I have ordered a Will hoping it will give some more information but until then this is what I have:

1.1784 - James Stuart was born 9 Jan 1784 at Gracehill House, Antrim, Ireland. His parents were James Stuart Esq. and Grace (probably Grace Lynd). Source: cadet papers from FindMyPast. The mother wrote a letter giving his date of birth and where he was baptized. The reverend of the church there signed an affidavit stating that he was the one who performed the baptism. The father also signed something stating that the information was correct

2.1835 - A son, Henry Benson Stuart, was born 20 Apr 1835 in Calcutta, India. The father's name and profession: James Stuart Major HCM Service and Deputy Secretary Military Department. Source: British in India baptisms from FindMyPast. No mother mentioned.

3. 1839 - Lieutenant-Colonel James Stuart succeeded Sir William Cassement as Military Secretary to Government in India. Source: newspaper article from FindMyPast

4. 1846 - James Stuart CB becomes Lieutenant-Colonel. Source: Newspaper article from FindMyPast

5. 1852 - Newspaper article refers to him as Colonel Stuart of the East India Company, at present Military Secretary to the Government of India, son of James Stuart Esq. Source: newspaper article from FindMyPast

6. 1851-1854 - stated as Colonel Stuart CB in son's Cadet papers; letter from his son in 1854 he is called Colonel J. Stuart CB, Secretary to the Government of India in the Military Department. Source: son's Cadet papers from FindMyPast

7. 1859 - dies 19 Jul 1859 at his home in Gracehill, Antrim, called Major-General James Stuart CB, for many years Secretary to the Government of India, Miltary Department. Ireland -Source: newspapers articles and Probate Calendar from FindMyPast and Ancestry

8. 1859 - son Henry Benson Stuart marries Isabella Louise Carter 17 Nov 1859 - father is down as James Stuart, occupation Major General

9. 1868 - son Henry Benson Stuart marries Anna Mary Bourke. Father: James Stuart, General CB

10. 1871 Death of Maria Stuart. Colonel Widows pension on FindMyPast states her as the widow of Major-General J Stuart CB who died 19 Jul 1859.

Sorry for the very long post and thanks for your input!

Worcestershire / St. Kenelms, Romsley

I'd love some input on my 2nd great-grandparents marriage.

GGreat-grandad was from Quarry Bank, Staffordshire. GGreat-grandma was from Lye, Worcestershire. In 1872 they married at St. Kenelms in Romsley and gave their residence as Romsley.

Why would they marry there and likely lie about their residence when they could have married in one of their own parishes?

Buckinghamshire / Welch/Durleys from Whitchurch?
« on: Monday 04 March 19 18:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for more on my Welch/Welsh ancestors from Whitchurch. My 5th great-grandfather was James Welch. He was born about 1784. I think this was in Whitchurch. He married Phoebe Cheshire in 1806.

I'm struggling to find his parents. On FindMyPast I found a baptism for a James Welsh, son of Robert and Rachel Welsh. However, I have several DNA matches and have seen several family trees that show Richard Welch and Rachel Durley as his parents. I cannot find any sources to prove this. Unfortunately the baptism record from FindMyPast was just a transcript and no image.

Anyways, hoping there might be some others researching the Welch name :)

Cornwall / Proving or Disproving George Henry Dunn b. 1883
« on: Friday 01 February 19 18:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm new to the Cornwall forum and to researching anyone in Cornwall. This is going to be a long post but I'll try to keep it as short as possible.

There is a baptism for a George Henry Dunn born 4 Jun 1883, illegitimately. I believe the baptism was in a place called Marazion. He was from Lelant. His mother was Catherine Jane Dunn. Catherine had an illegitimate son, Alfred Charles Dunn, in 1872.

I can't find a burial for George and he doesn't seem to appear in the censuses. I can only guess that he was taken in by another family.

Now we come to my Worcestershire roots. My great-grandad was George Harry Dunn born 28 Aug 1883 in Wollescote. He was adopted, or taken in, by Edwin Dunn and Betsy Brooks.

Could they be the same person?

The birth dates don't line up and neither do the place of birth BUT I'm finding DNA matches who have some of the names in the tree I made for George Henry Dunn.

I'd love some help trying to prove or disprove my theory.

Thank you.

Staffordshire / James DUNN b.abt 1743 Kingswinford
« on: Monday 07 January 19 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
I'm wondering if someone can give me some direction.

I have a James Dunn who was supposedly born about 1742/43 in or around Kingswinford to William Dunn and Mary Lynton. This is going by several trees I've seen as well as websites. However, I have not found a source for this. James is supposed to be the brother of Daniel Dunn and one of the original settlers of Dunn's Bank, Quarry Bank.

I have found a baptism for a James Dunn in 1743 but the son of James and Mary. FreeReg shows a burial at Brierley Hill for a James Dunn from Dunn's Bank in 1836, age 79. I haven't found another burial for a James Dunn to match the proper birth year.

Where can I search for James Dunn born William and Mary?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Jabez MAYNARD 1770-1818
« on: Wednesday 12 December 18 13:42 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for the baptism or origin of Jabez Maynard.

I'm Canadian so I don't know the Yorkshire area at all. I've been focusing on my 5th great-grandfather who lived in Yorkshire

My 5th great-grandfather was Jabez Maynard who was born about 1770. I'm not sure if he was born in Yorkshire or not as I haven't been able to find a baptism for him.
He married Sarah Harrison (born 1774 Thorne to Richard and Betty Harrison) on 25 Nov 1793 at St. George Doncaster.
He died in Dec 1818 at a place called Drypool. His burial was 20 Dec 1818 Holy Trinity Kingston-upon-Hull. His abode was listed as Groves.
As far as I know they had 9 children: John, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, Jabez (my 4th great-grandmother), Jane, Ann, Benjamin, and Joseph.

I was hoping someone might have some Maynards, Harrisons, or Hodgsons in their family trees. Some other names that I'm interested in are Mannering and Abercrombie. Those are the middle names of two of Jabez and Ann's daughters. I haven't been able to figure out the significance of those names.

**There is another Jabez Maynard from Pontefract who married Sarah Wray and died in 1840. Through certificates and lots of research we have concluded that this Jabez is not the one I'm searching for.**
