Its not just surnames what about the unfortunate first names Like Primrose Smith for a Man or Anguish Lake. Both who I have found in my studies.

Ancestry's 1901 does not cover all areas but it does allow you to see the original census which is brilliant.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Census web sites - keep searching!
« on: Saturday 28 August 04 16:15 BST (UK)  »
Although bad spelling can be fustrating on census it can be amusing I have been looking for smiths Easy name to find you would think even with variations but who would have thought that the name my fred would be listed as is Sonrth. Same for his wife How did they get to that, My expanation is try typing for hours and you start hitting a few wrong ones !!! If you are sure they should be on the census they will be there just use your imagination.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: 1911 census
« on: Saturday 28 August 04 16:06 BST (UK)  »
The early release would be a boon for us researching and in Ireland we can already browse through the 1911 census as earlier census data was destroyed. I haven't heard of it causing any problems. Like some one said most people alive that could be on this census would have been children and what the census held on them would be just their age and birthplace, and family and where they lived.
My mother who is 74 and thought she knew about her family has been amazed at what I have found out about her family in England and things she didn't know. A cousin of hers who is 93 has always wondered where her parents came from and was delighted when I was able to find out for her. So it could have its pluses. I am sure some bright spark could poll the 80+ and ask their opinion
as it affects them and take it from there. From the oldies in my family nobody has an objection.

Completed Census Requests / 1871 census lookup for Mack family
« on: Friday 27 August 04 22:01 BST (UK)  »
I have a problem for you all I have a family of Mack which I can find in 1851 and  poss 1861, and 1881,1891 and 1901 I just need the 1871 to complete the picture.

This is how the family should look in 1871

Edward Mack     <47> Shoreditch/whitechapel, London
Occupation Chair maker,
Sarah Mack        <44> Ely, Cambridge
Edward  Mack    19/20 Shoreditch,London
Frederick Mack   17/18 Shoreditch, London
Leonard Mack    15/16 Shoreditch, London
Mary Mack          13/14 Shoreditch, London
Walter Mack       10/11 Shoreditch, London
Sylvanus Mack    7/8  Shoreditch, London

they were in Lancashire in 1868 as one of their sons died in the chorlton dist and their last daughter could possibly have been born in Hulme district. I have had a lady look for them in The lancashire census but that was over a week ago and she couldn't find them when I talked to her a couple of days ago. Although she said she was still looking!!!  I had some one check the nottinghamshire census but they weren't there. They were there in 1881 though.
So anyone with an 1871 census of anywhere would they check for this family. If your census is searchable Sylvanus should stick out like a sore thumb. Sylvanus is my great grandfather and it is the only census that lists him with his parents and siblings and for that it is precious to me.
(They listed him as Edward in the 1881 census)!!!!!!!!

So please have a look for me Thanks to all
