The Lighter Side / Re: Mass Observation Day 2022
« on: Sunday 15 May 22 18:53 BST (UK)  »
I have just emailed my diary, I wasn't going to do one this year as the day was extremely boring. Like so many others the last twelve months have been sad at times,

we had to say goodbye to the last two of our families wartime generation, they both were in their 90's and were so tired.

We also have a new member of the family, the little fella in my avatar, he decided to come and live with us. We think he'd probably been thrown out. He is most definitely in charge and all the family are besotted with him.

You mentioned the doctors surgery in a previous post, if the school was very close to it I just can't see that there would be enough room for many more pupils in one of the surrounding houses.

Not that this helps but I do remember the doctors surgery on Coleshill Road which closed several years ago. It was situated on the same side of the road as Amberley School but a fair distance away. The houses on that stretch of the road are big and I can well imagine another school being there.

There was another more recent doctors surgery right at the bottom of Coleshill Road which is now a nursery, opposite the Clock garage. I wouldn't have thought a school would have been there, but who knows.

I hope you manage to find your school eventually.

That's a really interesting link Nic. I got a bit sidetracked at reading about schools my family must of attended.

Ruskie as you say there are plenty of big houses along Coleshill Road that could be used as a school. Perhaps this one is going to remain a mystery.

I wonder if the OP recalls the school being near Hodge Hill Common. I had a look at Castle Bromwich on Wikipedia (as you do  ;D). It says that a large house once stood between Chipperfield Road (that's off Coleshill Road) and Hodge Common. Could that have been the school. Now it's a grassed over corner position with flats set back. I wonder how many pupils the school had.

We moved to the area when I was a child in 1956/7, and I went to The Firs school for a short time until we moved again. I am just so curious as to the location of the school!

That's annoying! I know the Coleshill Road, Castle Bromwich well but I have no memory of a  'Guthlick House' . I wonder if it might be worth contacting the Birmingham Mail newspaper they have a letters page, it covers a wide area and someone might remember the school. The email address will be online.

Just sent my diary off, what a boring day it was too! At least my sisters birthday card and present arrived on the day. It comes to something when you get excited about having a supermarket delivery.  ;D

There used to be a preparatory school called Amberley Preparatory School at 70 Coleshill Road, Ward End which is just further up the road from Castle Bromwich. If you Google the name of the school it gives some details...
