New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: John Thompson boot and shoemaker
« on: Monday 08 June 20 10:17 BST (UK)  »
thank you all for the information from New Zealand. It's great to see what you Kiwi experts can find. And appears that I must have many distant relatives over there. I'll try to find him with his new wife in Uk in1871. I had been looking for 12 year old James B. without success. Sue

New Zealand Completed Requests / John Thompson boot and shoemaker
« on: Sunday 07 June 20 21:11 BST (UK)  »
John Thompson born Grayrigg (Kendal) Westmorland 1838 and family go missing in England after the 1861 census when he is a Boot and shoemaker in St Bees Cumberland. He has a wife Sarah( Burrows) born 1835 and 2 year old son James Burrows Thompson both born in Blackburn ,Lancashire. There are no more children born in England.
Next found on sons wedding cert .when he married Slany Dalton in Wellington 25 Dec 1883 where it says father John lives in Nelson. I 've found adverts for him as Bootmaker in Nelson through out 1882.and he wants an apprentice in 1884. Next mentioned when his son is bankrupt in 1897 and says that it's because he lent his father money to become a hop farmer 8 or 9 years before and he's never got it back.
Is there anyway to find John and family arriving in New Zealand or where they lived. I know son James B. died 1904 in Wellington.
Any suggestions welcome. Thanks Sue

Lancashire / Re: Lenny Barn Fields, Rochdale

Why not look at Lenny Barn on google earth. The new Falinge Park school takes up more room that it's predecessor and has a large barn like sports hall. The playing fields are still there and hardly used by anybody. Occasional boys playing cricket or football at the weekend ,people like me with their dogs. Falinge Fold looks good except for the old Hall which I believe is for sale. Steps down to the Spod from Cinnamon St impassable, steps and path from behind school a mess but walkable, still pens down by river. Could be lovely but blighted by Turners. Sue

I haven't seen FMPs Manchester Industrial school records but I did get my grandmas (there in 1901) from Manchester Central library. In addition to Admission they note her conduct and where she was discharged to age 16 ie employer and address. They kept tabs on her till age 21, noting she made a good marriage.

Good to see Tamars memorial card.
I don't  think she's  Isabellas sister.
The will of James Park of Higher Stangerthwaite Killington 27 March 1856 mentions his children as the late Jane Braithwaite, Tamar Oversby,Mary Park and sons Joseph and Thomas. See post More Park Wills .
Interestingly my Ancestor John Park farmed at Ewebank until his death in 1836. Perhaps they took over his farm.
He was born around 1784 and married Elizabeth Airey who was living at Sizergh Hall in 1804.
Sue.
