Canada / MCKAY in Ontario
« on: Tuesday 21 July 15 17:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am interested in finding some relatives by marriage who came from Argyll, Scotland to Ontario, Canada some time after WW1.

My great uncle's sister-in-law, Christina DUNCAN, (b. Sept. 28, 1882 at Dron, Perthshire) married George MCKAY on January 23, 1914 at Kilmore and Kilbride, Argyll, Scotland. George was a furnace man in the aluminium works near their home in Kinlochleven. I wonder if he went to Hamilton, Ontario where he could get similar work at the time?

Christina was the daughter of John DUNCAN and Christina CRICHTON. George was the son of John MCKAY and Margaret MURRAY.

Christina's sister, Agnes DUNCAN, had married Hugh MCGREGOR in Scotland and immigrated to western Canada about 1919. When Agnes and Hugh retired, they moved east to Ontario, where their son, John MCGREGOR, lived in Downsview. Agnes was not in the big city long, it seems, before she was struck by a car and killed. Sometime before her death (1950s??), she and her sister Christina had a visit. After that, contact with the MCKAYs was lost.

Looking for any connections to these MCKAYs in Ontario as we are in Ontario too. Thank you!

Ireland / James and Ellen WALSH Ireland to Canada Late 1700s
« on: Saturday 04 July 15 21:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Help! I have several Irish branches in my husband's tree, but I have no experience with Irish genealogy. I am comfortable with Canada (his birth place) and Scotland (my birthplace), but no idea how to begin searching in Ireland.

I will start with his maternal side, part of which came from somewhere in Ireland to Prince Edward Island (then called St. John Island) just before 1800. All I know is that James WALSH was born before 1781 and his wife, Ellen ?. was born about 1786, both in Ireland. This is the family in question:  http://www.islandregister.com/walsh3.html

Can anyone give me any assistance based on these meagre facts? Thanks very much!

One Name Studies: H to M / HARRIS From Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, England
« on: Monday 01 June 15 15:34 BST (UK)  »
My husband's great grandfather, William HARRIS, was born in 1826 in Buckingham, Bucks, England to James HARRIS and Mary SPICER. He immigrated to Canada in 1844, alone I believe, and left his family behind in England.

My husband has done Y DNA testing to confirm this. There are 2 good DNA matches for him on the Harris Project, one tracing this HARRIS line in Bucks and Oxfordshire back to the 1600s!

Anyone else out there?

One Name Studies: N to S / PIERCE From Vermont & Massachusetts
« on: Monday 01 June 15 15:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My husband's great great grandfather, Reuel A. (likely for Anson) PIERCE, was b. around 1805 somewhere in Vermont, USA. I have no family or exact place of birth for him.

About 1830, Reuel migrated to Upper Canada (now Ontario) with at least 2 other Vermont based families, the SMITHs and RHODES. They all settled in Fitzroy Twp., Carleton County which is near Ottawa. In looking at the SMITH and RHODES families, I learned they had Massachusetts roots. I am thinking that our PIERCEs came from there too.

I have found the SMITH family in Williston Twp., Chittendon County, Vermont before going to Canada. Possibly our PIERCEs were there too, pre 1830?

Reuel PIERCE's daughter, my husband's great grandmother, married William HARRIS in Canada in 1874. My husband has taken a DNA test for his paternal HARRIS line. Wondering if this test can be expanded to pull in any PIERCE connections? Would love to connect to whatever PIERCE line my husband is from.

Lanarkshire / MCKINNON in Hutchesontown
« on: Saturday 16 May 15 21:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Well, I have been following my elusive great great grandfather all over the west of Scotland and this is now the 4th county board I have posted to in hopes of finally pinning him down!

I found his widow's death in Hutchesontown in 1886, so perhaps I will find some trace of him in this area too, with any luck. Christina (MCDOUGALL) MCKINNON was the 2nd wife of Archibald MCKINNON. They were both natives of Kilninian, Argyll which on the island of Mull. They married in 1849 on Coll, another island. They are found on yet another island, Tiree, in 1851. In 1861, they are in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire where Archibald is employed in the dye works. I cannot find them in 1871 anywhere yet.

Archibald was born abt. 1811 to Neil MCKINNON and Margaret MCARTHUR. Christina was born abt. 1813 to John MCDOUGALL and Mary BEATON. Thank you for any clues you might have.

Dunbartonshire / Archibald MCKINNON
« on: Thursday 14 May 15 01:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My father and I have been on the hunt for my missing great great grandfather for many years and I just saw a clue that might finally end our search in Dunbartonshire. Hoping someone here can help.

Archibald MCKINNON was born around 1810 on the Isle of Mull in the parish of Kilninian, Argyll. He married first to Catherine MCARTHUR in the 1830s and had 3 known children, Catherine, Donald and Neil at Burg, Kilninian. Between 1847 - 1849, Catherine MCARTHUR died and Archibald married again. He married for the second time in 1849 to Christine/Christina/Christy/Chrissy MCDOUGALL on the island of Coll. The couple is next found on the 1851 census, along with Archibald's son, Neil, on Tiree. Then they vanish.

I had an idea that they might have gone to Inverness or Skye but no luck there so far. Today, I saw a clue, on a website that I have no subscription to, mentioning an Archibald and Christina  MCKINNON from Kilninian living somewhere in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire in 1861. Could it really, finally be them??

Thank you for any answers!

Inverness / MCKINNON Mull to Skye??
« on: Wednesday 13 May 15 20:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My elusive great great grandfather, Archibald MCKINNON, was born around 1810 in Kilninian & Kilmore on the Isle of Mull and married Catherine MCARTHUR in the mid - late 1830s. They had 3 known children, Catherine, Donald and Neil at Burg, K & K in the 1840s, then they vanish. For a long time, we did not know what became of Archibald and his wife, although the children turn up on Mull later on.

Recently, we had a breakthrough. It seems that Archibald's wife died between 1847 - 1849 because Archibald married a second time, this time to Christina MCDOUGALL on the island of Coll in 1849. By 1851, they are on Tiree and Archibald's son, Neil MCKINNON, is with them. After that, gone again!

This may be a long shot, but tiny clues point to the possibility that Archibald may have gone to Skye or some other place in Invernesshire.
1) Neil MCKINNON never went to school nor learned English. He must have been raised somewhere fairly isolated.
2) Neil MCKINNON worked as shepherd as a grown man and had many different employers including a position at Struan, Skye at one point (maybe around 1900?).
3) Neil's sister, Catherine, married James MCDOUGALL and they were living somewhere in Invernesshire in 1870 when their daughter, Mary Stuart MCDOUGALL, was born.

Looking for any trace of Archibald MCKINNON and his second wife, Christina/Christy/Chrissy MCDOUGALL, both born circa 1810 on Mull, anywhere Invernessshire or otherwise. Thank you!

Argyllshire / Finally! My Missing MCKINNON Great Greats.
« on: Sunday 03 May 15 04:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My great great grandparents, Archibald MCKINNON and Catherine MCARTHUR, both born about 1810 at Burg, Kilninian, Isle of Mull, have long been missing but we may finally be getting somewhere. They appear there on the 1841 census with young daughter, Catherine McKinnon. We know that they had 2 more sons, Donald and Neil (my great grandfather) at Burg in the 1840s, then they disappear. They don't turn up on any further Mull census nor do they die!

The 3 children are found on various census on Mull over the years and on marriage records, but where are Archibald and Catherine? It looks now as if Catherine died in the 1840s and Archibald left the area. The elder son, Donald McKinnon, remained and stayed with his McArthur relatives. Neil's whereabouts during his childhood were a mystery as he never got any schooling and he never spoke a word of English even though Donald did.

My father, after MANY years of digging, has stumbled across what he believes to be a second marriage for Archibald McKinnon on July 5, 1849 on the Isle of Coll to Christy McDougall. I found them next on Tiree in 1851 at Balephetrish.

629   Balephetrish   McKinnon   Archibald   M   40   Head   Agricultural Labourer   Parish of Kilninian (Mull)
629   Balephetrish   McKinnon   Christina   M   40   Wife   Ag. Lab's Wife   Parish of Kilninian (Mull)
629   Balephetrish   McKinnon   Niel      7   Son   Ag. Lab's Son   Parish of Kilninian (Mull)
629   Balephetrish   McKinnon   Archibald   W   63   Visitor   Tailor   Parish of Kilninian (Mull)

I guess what I am trying to learn now is when Catherine McArthur died (and is buried - likely Kilninian), when Archibald McKinnon died (and is buried - maybe Tiree??) and where Archibald and his 2nd wife, Christy McDougall, ended up on the 1861 and subsequent census records. I will keep looking but I welcome any clues. Thank you!

Lanarkshire / What Became of the FINLAYSONs?
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

My grandmother's aunt, Catherine MCKINNON of Burg, Kilninian (Isle of Mull), Argyll married James MCDOUGALL of the same area. Together, they had 4 daughters and 2 may have died in childhood. James died young too and left Catherine expecting their last child. That last baby, another girl, was named Jemima probably in honour of her late father. We have never known what happened to Jemima (or her sisters Mary or Ann) until a recent clue.

I found a reference to Catherine's 1906 death at Maryhill, Glasgow. The informant was her son-in-law Murdo FINLAYSON. Aha! With my 1 remaining SP credit, I found a marriage for him to Jemima MCDOUGALL in 1902. Wondering if they had any family, where they went, died etc. Thank you!
