The Stay Safe Board / Using Skype to keep in touch
« on: Monday 23 March 20 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
Skype is a program that enables two or more people to have a private video conference from tablets or computers with a microphone, speakers and a Web camera. Other similar programs are available.

Despite having worked in IT for most of my career I had never use Skype until today. I have a friend, who was a captain of industry, but had very little experience of computers. He has a tablet. We spent an hour on the phone, during which I talked him through downloading the program, configuring it (based on my total lack of experience of the program), and within 45 minutes we were able to see each other and speak to each other. If you're worried about keeping in touch with friends or family do give this a try, and I'm sure somebody in your family will be able to provide the same limited experience that I had!

As well there are many tutorials on YouTube, although it might take you a while to find one that isn't presented by a noisy would be game show presenter.

If you have any problems I am sure you will get adequate support from other Rootschat Skype users.

The Stay Safe Board / Re: State of Emergency Covid-19 (Part 5)

I wish the media had kept this totally to themselves. We wouldn't be in any much more danger, and we certainly wouldn't be worrying about it.

The feeling I get, out and about during the last few days is half the people in the UK are in a state of panic and half couldn't care less. That sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Gadget, great news. I read they are recruiting drivers very quickly.  Also, someone applied for a job at 7pm, and got it by 10pm.

There is a Lathom just north of Liverpool, but I can't read it as Lathom.

The Stay Safe Board / Re: Party thread - All welcome
« on: Sunday 22 March 20 00:44 GMT (UK)  »
This party will have to be a substitute for the 1960s party I was going to attend in a month's time. I intended going as one of the Beatles, off the cover of Sgt Pepper, and, although I get my haircut every 3 months and I hate having it done, I was letting it grow a little bit longer. I now expect the party will be cancelled, so I'm quite keen to get my haircut. I do not want to sit for 15 to 20-minutes being breathed on by a barber who has been breathed on by lots of other people. Will anyone at the party have some garden shears or sharp kitchen scissors and be prepared to give me a number two, in less than 3 minutes?

Alternatively, as I haven't tried cutting my own hair since I was 2 and 1/2, I'm quite tempted to give it a go myself.

Are any other gentlemen in a similar situation?

Finally, the lyrics of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's song, "Almost cut my hair", come to mind,

"Almost cut my hair,
Happened just the other day
It's gettin' kind of long
I could've said it was in my way
But I didn't and I wonder why

Must be because I had the flu this Christmas
And I'm not feeling up to par
And increases my paranoia,
But I'm not, I'm not giving in an inch to fear. "

I'm not religious, and my mother is long gone, but I think the celebration is of Mothering Sunday. It is not a celebration engendered by the greeting card company.

It's selfish people giving their cats double helpings of caviar!

I fire up my breadmaker once or twice a week. My song will be "They're coming to take me away haha" by Napoleon XIV.

I'd guess that many pet owners are panic buying for their pets as well, in case our movements are restricted.
