Thank you for all the help.  Maggie died during childbirth a year after the marriage.  I did send for and received her death certificate.

Wow....I had narrowed down the choices for Helen to three....and this evening I looked at the certificate for James Ker, Esq. with the baptism of a daughter....and for some reason, I thought it just might be her but....there was also a William married to Margaret Burn that was also a possibility.... thank you!

Have you checked scotlandspeople site?  Also, freebmd which is always updating.  Those records only begin at 1837 but many relevant Tough entries.  Still waiting to hear from John....I reach him at *

Peter Tough and Ann Keith were married in 21 December 1833 in Aberdeen.  Their first born was named John but we are sure he died young.  There was James and then Alexander Kidd.  Alexander was the name also of Ann Keith's father.

James married Jane Hutchinson.  Alexander also married and ended up Durham with his family.  Their first son was Peter who died young.  Alexander was 2nd....one of the brothers, William, ended up in South Africa as did Alexander.  Alexander had married Jane Carter.  Children of that marriage were Elizabeth McCabe Tough, James William Tough, Robert Burch Tough, Jane (Jenny) Tough, Laura May Tough (my grandmother), Norman Tough and Alexander Tough.

If Jean does not know how to contact John, I can give you his email....John is a crusty scotsman!! But, if you are willing to share...there is no problem!!  John has spent hundreds of hours tracking both the Toughs and the Hutchinson lines...

I read your post and it would appear that you are related to one of Alexander Tough's brothers, John.  There is presently a John Tough living in the north of England who is related to John!  Have you been in touch with him?  I am not sure about the Alexander and Margaret you mention....John is still searching for evidence of Peter Tough's parents .  I do have a copy of the marriage parish record of Peter and Ann and one of the witnesses is Alexander Tough but the relationship to Peter is not clear.  In the line of James Tough and Jane Hutchinson (13 children), their first born was named Peter who died.  The second child was named Alexander (mine).

Let me know!

I went back and checked the certificate.  Frederick is a barman....is that the same as a law clerk?  His father, John, is listed as a Waslicensed victualler.  Shame on me, I had made an "assumption"!  Was thinking of occupation in more modern terms and American at that!  Thank you very much!

In 1891 Census, John Joseph Curran is a licensed victualler.  Place of census was 19 London Road.  A son was named Frederick but he appears to be missing in the census.  He was b 1883 if age is correct on his marriage certificate to a Maggie Clazey in 1914.  Frederick's occupation in County Durham was Publican marriage certificate.  Maggie died a year later in childbirth....these two were in Hertfordshire at that time.  Did his father remain in Nottinghamshire....and for how long?
