US Completed Requests / Re: New York Passenger or did she swim over?
« on: Thursday 15 April 10 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I had the same problem with an ancestor, they were living in NY, but I couldn't find any trace of them arriving, anyway - I eventually found them arriving in Canada and travelling into America.
Have you looked at other entry points into the US??

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Are Electoral roll lookups available????
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 17:30 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out if an ancestor was living at the same address in 1922 as in 1911, where would I go to find out - the library or council offices???
If anybody regularly visits these places - would you mind checking for me.
The address I need to find is : 16 Park Place, Bradford, Manchester. Its in the Prestwich registration district.
In 1911, the address belongs to my great great grandfather John Johnson, and I need to know if he is still there between 1920 and 1925.
I would be very grateful if someone is able to do this, if not - I can hopefully get to manchester later in the year.
I look forward to any replies.
Thanks in advance.

England / Re: Ordering death certs - advice needed.
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 17:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have just spoken to the GRO, and the advice they gave was basically find as much 'extra' info as you can and go to the registry office in question, in this case its prestwich, Manchester.
Sounds like it could be a needle in a haystack!! But hoping it'll be worth it when I get the certificate.

England / Ordering death certs - advice needed.
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 16:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the death record of my great great grandfather, but I don't know when he died, all I know is a rough time period. I think I have narrowed it down to four possibilities, but rather than spend upwards of £40 on certificates, do the GRO do a search for extra information on the certificate, such as year of birth or spouses name??
Thanks, Benn

Lancashire / Re: Bradford ironworks, Manchester

Thanks to you all for your help, I can confirm that the Charles Johnson mentioned above is my great grandfather, his father owned a toffee shop on Iron Street, I just hope now his war record has survived.
Thanks again,
Benn

Excellent Manmack, thankyou very much, they were Charles' brothers, I take it that info is from absent voters list??
Migky I've been in touch with the Grand Lodge, with little result, they don't keep records etc that would be of much use, worth a try though.
Thanks to you both for your help!! Invaluable.  ;)

Hi to you both, thanks for the info so far, the Charles Johnson that Migky found is a possibility, I know his mothers family were Irish, and I've heard that later in his life he was a member of an Orange lodge in Manchester and took part in orange day parades.
Thats as sure as I can be, as for the address, perhaps I can ask around the family and see if it rings any bells.
Thanks again for your help.
