Armed Forces / Researching soldiers of ww1 & ww2
« on: Friday 18 November 05 17:14 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace two family members who served in the first world war and the second, they survived both.
How would I go about finding regiments they were in etc? Obviously, if a soldier was killed in the war, you can usually find them in cwgc, but is there a website that lists servicemen who survived. Unfortunately I dont know what regt they served in, all I know is that they lived in Manchester at the time of the wars. Their names were, John Joseph Duffy, and Charles Henry Johnson.
Any help very much appreciated.
Thanks, Benn.

Shropshire / Marriage help please
« on: Friday 18 November 05 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the marriage registration for William Dyke and Martha ?. William was born about 1828 in Buildwas, Martha was born about 1831 I think in Cound, although every census gives a different place of birth!!
Their first child was born about 1852ish, in Kenley, shrops. So I'd imagine their marriage was about 1851-1852. I've searched freebmd, shrops bmd, but come up with nothing. I'm also after Marthas maiden name.
I hope someone out there can help!!
Many thanks, Benn.

Staffordshire / WESTWOODS of Harborne
« on: Wednesday 16 November 05 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find information on the Westwood family of Harborne, they moved to manchester around 1870, but I'm looking for info before that.
So far I have Samuel Westwood, born about 1826 Harborne, he married Elizabeth, surname unknown, and their first child was Edward Charles Westwood, born 1849 Harborne. In the 1851 census, their address was Greenfield Road, Harborne. I'm trying to find the details of Samuel and Elizabeths wedding, inc.maiden name. Also Samuels family, his parents any siblings etc. I've searched freebmd and the igi, but to no avail.
Any help will be gratefully received, Thanks, Benn.

Thanks for that Cedas, I'll have an ask around with my cousins, and see if they can come up with any other family names or certificates.
I've just noticed on your profile, your researching 'Street' family in Lancs and cheshire. Do you have any from Oldham area? I have a Bertha Street, born 1906 in middleton.

Europe / Ireland to Everton, Duffy
« on: Monday 14 November 05 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace my great great grandparents, all I know is that they moved from Ireland and settled in Everton sometime in the late 1800's. My great grandfathers surname was Duffy, but I believe he changed it to that later in life. I think the original surname was Coogan, but I have no way of verifying this.
Can anyone suggest what I can do, or where to research irish immigrants and changes of name?.
I look forward to any replies.
Regards, Benn.

World War One / Lancashire Fusiliers 16th Battalion, help please
« on: Monday 14 November 05 18:33 GMT (UK)  »
Perhaps someone out there can help, I've recently found out my great grandfather was killed in action in France-Flanders, 1917. I've found his details on cwgc, and on the soldiers died cdrom. But I'm looking to investigate his life further, where and when he enlisted, where he died and any battled he may have fought. There are alot of questions that need answering. I hope someone can shed some light, how do I research this??
His name was Arthur Westwood, private 35522, he's buried at the British Savy Cemetery.
I look forward to any replies.
Regards, benn.
