Kent Completed Lookup Requests / John & Joanna Phillips of Woolwich
« on: Monday 01 May 06 23:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
My line comes down from John & Joanna Phillips of Woolwich who were in Woolwich between 1806 - 1816.

I have their son William (born 1806) on the 1851 & 1861 census, but by then his 5 sisters (Ann 1808, Mary 1811, Elizabeth 1812, Eliza 1813, Susanna 1816) were all probably married.
However, there is a slight possibility that the parents could have survived long enough to be counted on the 1841 or 1851 census.  If anyone can find them, please let me know.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Cliftons of Brighton
« on: Sunday 09 April 06 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi There

I have a small void in my research.
My ancestor Francis Clifton died in Stone Street, Brighton in 1838.
I know what happened to his wife Lucy (who he married in 1827) and their children
William b 1827,
Emma b 1829,
Lucy b 1831,
and Francis b 1833,
from 1851 onwards, but so far, the sheer size of Brighton/Hove's un-indexed 1841 census has defeated me.
Have any of you come across this family in 1841?

Furthermore, (really clutching at straws) has anyone come across the baptism of Francis Clifton senior (b 1798) in any of the parishes that have yet to to be put on the IGI?

Angus (Forfarshire) / John Erskine Hay
« on: Saturday 04 February 06 07:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ellusive ancestor.

The enlistment record of John Erskine Hay (son of a farmer called Arthur Hay) says he was born circa 1845 in Dundee in Fife (not Angus).  Fife & Dundee are either side of the bridge so clearly there is something incorrect there.

So far, the earliest record I have of him, other than a 'possible' siting of a John Hay in London on the 1861 census, is his enlistment in the Marines in 1863.   Fortunately I have found him on every census post that date, but all those records only give his place of birth as Scotland.  I therefore have a total void about his early life, no positive info regarding his mother's name, nor do I know exactly where in Scotland he was born.

Any help would therefore be appreciated.
