I know this is an old thread but thought I would look at it, as it's a branch of my surname and I live in Wiltshire. The family you are looking for seem to be based at CastleCombe near Corsham in Wiltshire.  I found them on 1871 and 1881 census, still in Castle Combe. Incidentally, Ruttie is another spelling of the Rutty surname and can be traced back to the 1400s in Melksham.
Hope this is helpful,
Craig 😁

Ok Heather, feel free to get back to me as an when you like. My aim is to try and find a link in the Rutt's from Bedford way or Yorkshire.
My name is Craig. You are not related to the Professor from Southampton University are you? He was a Rutt but I think this was his line too?
Just a thought?
Kind regards,
Craig

Herbert John Rutt I have and I have a deal of information regarding his brother Louis Rutt, having met a man who knew a great deal about him and found where he lived and worked.
There were some oddities to his story, like the fact he knew Louis but didn't know he was a twin??
But I can try to get some order to this for you.

Herbert John's parents were Sarah Ann Shirfield and James Rutt, if it's the same family? Your Gran must have been Florence, Ethel or Elsie then?

Hi,
I know this is an old post but I have compiled quite a tree of Wiltshire Rutts, in an attempt to link them to my Rutt family from Bedford, Yorkshire and Wales. I'd gladly trade any information that I have. Feel free to contact me and discuss further.
Thanks,
Craig :)
