New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: McLeod - Waikumete Cemetery Headstone Lookup
« on: Thursday 14 July 16 06:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi, looking on Ancestry it appears there is no Headstone for his grave, so it's no wonder you failed to see it! From the electoral rolls it appears he was living at Matawai, away from his wife so it's possible they were estranged? Might help to explain why he was buried the was he was. And the reason he died (and is buried) in Auckland, I would guess, is because he died in the hospital (I have an ancestor with a similar case).

Cheers.

Might have to rethink it then, thanks regardless.

If this is not your photograph do we have permission to publish it on RootsChat ?

Sarah

Absolutely.

Whoops I meant the FIRST one was take after she died, she doesn't look that bad  ;D.
Do you think it could have been as late as 1906? Just trying to get across how remote the area in which they lived was.
Interesting on the fashion front.
Many thanks for the dates though, any idea on the ages of the subjects? My man would have been late 30's, she would have been early 20's.

I found this photo, as a negative listed in the catalogue at my local archives. All the information, provided with it, said was "Munro and 7 children". Now Munro is not a common surname in this region of NZ, at least early on, and I have a very strong suspicion that this may be my GG Grandad and part of his family. If I could get a date that would be fantastic (bear in mind they lived WAY out in the back blocks of the already very rural Wairarapa so clothing fashions/trends would probably not have been a priority.) Also help with genders and ages of the children as you'll see its not very apparent! I'll enclose another photo which came alongside it, I am hoping this is the first wife who died not long before I believe it may have been taken. Thank yous in advance.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Surname HILL/Masterton NI/1925ish
« on: Friday 17 June 16 08:24 BST (UK)  »
On somewhat of a different note, I live in Masterton and I can take some photos of the grave if you'd like. Also my family farmed and owned much of Te Ore Ore at the same time your Hill family were living there, I believe they were neighbours (i'm referring to the Percy family if any of your letters mention them). In regards to the watertower if its the one i'm thinking of it's still standing today, and there's also a good story to go along with it regarding someone who lived in it although I can't remember what it is, I'll have to ask my Grandad or Dad next time I see them.

Thanks a lot Jim, appreciated!

Hey all, I've been noting down the family photos with my Grandad, we've got through 10 odd boxed of various family material but these 3 photos have to some extent stumped us.

The first is a Cartes De Visite of a woman. Rounded edges, yellowish paper/board if that helps. Presumably from 1863 to 1874 as the back only says J D Wrigglesworth, whereas after 1874 it would have said Wrigglesworth and Binns. Taken in Wellington, NZ. Possibly of my GGG Grandmother born 1852? Or even her mother/mother in law? (Must be from this family). I'm terrible at telling ages from photo's so what do you think age wise? Could be a sister or cousin as well.

Second is of an elderly woman, in mourning? clothes. We have a suspicion its a photo of a different GGG Grandmother circa 1920 around the time of her husbands funeral, as we have several other photos from this time period, however this is the only photo printed on this type of paper. There is an x on the back which means my G Grandfather (the possible suspects grandson) didn't know who it was however as they likely never met (living an island apart will do that) this isn't too big of a problem.

Final photo is of a woman in a classroom, presumably a teacher. None of the family were teachers however my G Grandmothers family were heavily involved in Bible Classes. Aside from that we just dont know.

Cheers in advance
Sam

edit. Had to modify these in paint (there were 10 times too big for the uploader  ::) so sorry about the quality on the first, it's been done poorly.

CHeers Beg, I'll try buying it ASAP then.

No biggie on the lookup, my Grandad goes to the Archives at least once a month so I might just tag on next time.

Hi Sam,

His birth and possibly census records might have used a spelling variant of the name RANSOME.

Congratulations on your discoveries so far. The Hy J RANSOME on the Waimea certainly looks like him! :D

Good find, Whiteout7. 8) 8)

Good point, I've looked for ranson/ransom/ransome but nothing  :-[  :-[
