Radnorshire / What's the word.....?
« on: Friday 22 March 24 02:53 GMT (UK)  »
Dear folks, I would like some help....
In the attached picture, a line reads "December 27th, Cimbriani Dr of Saml Morris by his <a word> was baptized". I can't for the life of me figure out what <a word> is even though it looks so simple. I've asked here because it's from the PRs for Llanfihangel Nant Melan, Radnorshire, so I'm wondering if there's something specific there....

England / John Shakespear
« on: Wednesday 08 November 23 00:49 GMT (UK)  »
Greetings,
I'm trying to find a copy of a book, hopefully on line.
That book is "John Shakespear of Shadwell and his descendants 1619-1931". Familysearch has a copy but it's on film and they're not sending films out. Worldcat has several in libraries but they're a long way from Australia. There's one for sale but they want 1500 pounds for it.....
Any help greatly appreciated.

Other Countries / St Eustatius and St Croix
« on: Wednesday 01 November 23 22:29 GMT (UK)  »
Are two small islands in the Caribbean, with a Dutch/French and British History. St Eustatius is currently Dutch, while St Croix is part of the US Virgin Islands. So to my question, does anyone know where the church records for them are kept?

Devon / Baring family of Exeter
« on: Tuesday 20 June 23 13:32 BST (UK)  »
Greetings,
Somewhen about 1725 plus or minus a few years, John Baring (originally Johan Baring born in Germany in 1697, married Elizabeth Vowler, daughter of John Vowler and Elizabeth nee Townsend.
They went on to have 8 children, John buried 1728 at St Petrock, Francis buried St Leonard 1736, John buried 1816, Thomas Vowler buried St Leonard 1758, Francis buried St Leonard 1737, Francis buried 1810 (this is Sir Francis, the founder of Baring's Bank), Charles and Elizabeth. I'm unable to find primary sources (PRs etc) for any of their births/baptisms, nor for the marriage of John and Elizabeth nee Vowler. So far it looks like just about all the trees on Ancestry etc have copied Brett's information. Stirnet has all the same dates and so on and so on.
So my question. Does anyone know of sources for the births/baptisms/marriage that can be regarded as reliable?

Other Countries / Griffies Williams
« on: Saturday 15 October 22 04:05 BST (UK)  »
Greetings....
I have a little CONUNDRUM. There is a birth of a Julia Williams 22 Oct 1853 at Moulmein, baptized 28 Nov 1860. The parents are W.L.G. Williams, Major General M.N.I. and Mah Shway Min. As far as I can tell, W.L.G. is Watkin Lewis Griffies-Williams who was a General H.M. Army at about this time and served in both Burmese Wars (1824-26 and 1852).
That's not the conundrum. It could well be part of it though.
There is a marriage. Julia Williams aged 24, daughter of W.L.G. Williams was married at Moulmein in 1855 to Henry Augustus Bell aged 28.
The only way I can look at this is to push the birth of Julia back to about 1830 odd and the baptism back to about 1855 so she could get married.
Any thoughts?

In the birth registers for Edinburgh for 1802, the parents are given as James Robertson Esq W.S. and Mrs May Saunders his spouse St Cuthberts.....
Can anyone enlighten me as to the meaning of W.S. ?

Devon / Marriage at an early age
« on: Monday 16 May 22 03:12 BST (UK)  »
I have the following:
Baptism:
Bridgett Waldron baptized at Hemyock 25 Sep 1649 to Clement & Alice

Marriage:
Bridgett Waldron, daughter of Clement married William Pratt of Broadhembury at Hemyock 5 Feb 1654. The marriage was performed by a William Putt, Justice of the Peace.

If Bridgett was born around 1649 (she may well have been born somewhat earlier), is such a marriage feasible? The first child I can find is a Francis, baptized (and died) in 1665.

Thank you all kindly, Keith

Devon / Bradninch Parish Registers
« on: Wednesday 04 August 21 13:51 BST (UK)  »
Greetings,
Does anyone know if the Bradninch Parish Registers are accessible on line, or if they have been transcribed?
I've tried the big three (Ancestry, FindMyPast and Familysearch (there are some BTs in the cattledog, but no Murch stuff). There is no OPC according to Genuki. The Devon Family History Society doesn't have them. I'm about to look for a Bradninch area historian.
I'm looking for the marriage of a John Murch to Mary unknown and the births/baptisms of their five children John, Margaret, Sibly, William & Francis, all of this between 1600 and 1650.
I have the will of John the father (with a transcription)  (PCC - 1651) from which the above was extracted.
If I have to, I'll pay the Devon Record Office to dig the information out but that's a last resort.

Warwickshire / Bromley of Baginton Hall, Warwickshire
« on: Saturday 31 July 21 07:25 BST (UK)  »
Greetings all.....

I'm posting this here because it does involve the Bromley family of Baginton Hall, or at least one of the men who married one of the Bromleys. Where it will end up, I have no idea.

William Throckmorton Bromley (1726-1769) of Baginton Hall was born in London in 1726. He married a Bridget Davenport in 1756 at Westminster St James. At some point he was the M.P. for Warwickshire. Some time later, he inherited Baginton Hall along with a number of other properties from his father.

They had 5 children I know of: Bridget (1757-1785), Lucy (1758-1822), William (1759-1759), Mary (1761-1787) and a second William (1763-1810).

The second William inherited  Baginton Hall and all the other properties. He never married and dsp in 1810. The properties all then passed to Lucy who died in 1822. Lucy passed the properties to her cousin Rev. Walter Davenport, who added the surname Bromley. Note that both the Bromleys and Davenports were seriously wealthy. I mean SERIOUSLY.

It's to Lucy we now turn. She married Cromwell Price at St George Hanover Square Middlesex by License 3 Feb 1783.

So, by a roundabout route, we get to Cromwell Price. Does anyone here have any information about him, or where I may be able to find some? He was supposed to be a Captain in the Army is all I know. Oh, Lucy was a widow when she was buried at Baginton, so Cromwell died before 1822.

I've checked the following: Ancestry, Fold3, Findmypast, Familysearch, British Newspaper Archive, DNB, Alumni oxon and Alumni cantabrigiensis, Musgrave's Obituaries, brute force web search, all without success except for the marriage on Ancestry. Grrrr.

Thank you all most kindly, Keith
