What was the occupation for Thomas in 1891?

To narrow things down, have you found any other Thomas Cullen with a wife Catherine & a daughter Mary with similar details to what you know?

Annie

I used familysearch to find the 1891 census in Bradford, and it didn't list Thomas Cullen's occupation.

I've just done another search and I can't find any other Thomas Cullen's living in Bradford, but then again, I can't find any in Rotherham where my Thomas Cullen was living in 1881.
In 1881, there are Thomas Cullen's living in Kingsley in Cheshire and Liverpool.
In 1891, there is Thomas Cullen living in Bradford and one in Manchester.
In 1901, there are Thomas Cullen's living in Liverpool and Sheffield (Thomas Cullen in Sheffield is working in the Navy and living with other lodgers, not his family).

Places of birth for each, ages & occupation should be a good pointer whether or not to be discounted.

What info. did 1891 have on it?

Annie

The 1891 census was at Longcroft Place in Bradford;

Thomas Cullen, Head, Aged 40, Born in Ireland
Catherine Cullen, Wife, Aged 40, Born in Ireland
Mary Cullen, Daughter, Aged 18, Born in Cheshire
Sarah Cullen, Daughter, Aged 16,  Born in Yorkshire
Thomas Cullen, Son, Aged 14, Born in Cheshire
Ann Cullen, Daughter, Aged 12, Born in Cheshire
Ann MacFadden, Lodger, Aged 50, Born in Ireland

The result for Thomas Cullen looks promising (with being born in Ireland and at the right age), but Catherine wasn't born in Ireland, and their daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in Yorkshire rather than Cheshire.

Looks to be them in 1881....

Residence Upper Millgate 1st Court
Age   29
Marital Status Married
Occupation   Lab Iron Works
Birth Year (Estimated)   1852
Birthplace   Ireland

A search on later census records may reveal some more info. such as his actual place of birth & any other children?

Annie

I had found this census of 1881 - the main problem for me was finding the 1891 census (off the top of my head, one in Bradford was suggested to me but I am not sure if that one is correct or not).

It's not a common surname, this might help narrow down your search

His religious denomination will be needed for any search.

edited to add: That link only gives the search page this link if it works is on the result page when you search for McWeeny

Thank you, the second link goes to the results page. I believe he was Catholic (and his children and grandchildren were too).

You will have his occupation & his father's occupation from his marriage which could help to identify him on 1871 census if he was in Yorks at that time?

What were the names of their children in order, as this can help identify parents names although not always.

Annie

I think from what you've said that my first step should be to order the marriage certificate of Thomas Cullen.
By 'their', I'm presuming you mean Thomas Cullen and Catherine McWeeny's children? I only know of one child of theirs - Mary Elizabeth Cullen, born about 1876 in Rotherham (my great great grandmother).
I do not know any siblings of Thomas Cullen - only that his father was Johannis/John Cullen.

My 4x great grandfather was James McWeeny, born about 1826 in Ireland.
I've been unable to find his family so far, so I'm hoping someone on here will be able to shed a little bit of light on him, or at least point me in the right direction as to where I should start looking.
This is what I know about him;

Name: James McWeeny (recorded as Jacobi McQueeny on his daughter's marriage record).
DOB: circa 1826, Ireland (I don't know which county)
Spouse: Elizabeth Larkin (b. 1830, Birmingham). They were married at Ecclesall Bierlow in Yorkshire, England, in 1848.
Children: Catherine (b.1849), Elizabeth (b.1851), William (b.1854), George (b.1857), John (b.1859), Ellen (b.1862), Mary(b.1864), James (b.1867) and Joseph (b.1870). All born in Rotherham (Yorkshire, England).

I don't know when he came over to England either - or whether he came over with his parents or made a solo trip.
Any help with this would be great.

Ireland / Thomas CULLEN, born about 1852, Ireland

My 3x great grandfather was THOMAS CULLEN - he married Catherine McWeeny on 10th February 1873 at St Bede in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England. They had at least one daughter called Mary Elizabeth Cullen - born about 1876 in Rotherham.
On this marriage record, Thomas Cullen's father is listed as 'YOANNIS CULLEN' (I think this might be referring to Johannis, as in 'John'.

From the censuses, I know that Thomas Cullen was born in IRELAND (I don't know which county) in circa 1852. I do not know who his family were, apart from that his father was called Johannis/John Cullen.

How should I go about searching for his family? I can't really order a birth certificate for him since I know so little. I don't even know when he first came over to England, or whether his parents came over to England with him. Any help with this would be appreciated very much.

Can't find any record of a Wilfred Blackburn marriage

Thank you for this - I'd found the Wilfred Blackburn 1841 census previously, but this one is new to me (and I've just done a search for it and found it). The marriage is still a mystery to me too!

Search yorkshirebmd for lucys birth and get the maiden name from that

Unfortunately the BMD index for Lucy doesn't give a mother's maiden surname.

Is she not the Lucy A Blackburn shown on YorkshireBMD as registered in the Tickhill subdistrict of Doncaster in 1848, mother's maiden name Badger?

I've found a Lucy Ann Blackburn registered in Doncaster in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1848, but for some reason the maiden surname isn't showing, so if this is the same record that you have found then I'll have to take your word for it that the surname is Badger!
