London and Middlesex / Goater marriage help in London please
« on: Tuesday 14 May 13 12:27 BST (UK)  »
In the 1891 census Robert Goater (born 1856 London)  is with his wife Mary Ann & children (all born London) in Hull where his occupation is given as “Stationery Engine driver” - RG12,  Piece:3913, Folio: 125, Page:3

By 1901 they are back in London in Southwark and I have found a death for Mary A Goater in 1901 aged 46.

It appears that their first child Joseph Harris Goater was born 1873 in Rotherhithe.

Robert marries again on 22/12/1902 at St Stephen’s Church, Walworth to a Gelina Martin (widow – maiden name Levis) .

On the marriage record on the familysearch website it gives Robert’s father as John.

Please can someone find Robert’s first marriage to Mary A (was thinking Harris might be a clue?)  and any details on his father to help me identify the correct family.

Many thanks

Maria  :)

Afternoon everyone,

My twin boys are currently sitting their GCSE maths exam so to distract myself I am trying to work out some family tree tangles.

I have the following family on the 1851 census: -

Ruth GOATES Head Widow 55 Retired House Keeper b Leckford, Hampshire
John GOATES Son 23  Poulterer  b Longstock, Hampshire
William HARDING Grand Son 4  b Camden Town, London
Edward BRICE Servant 18 General Sevt  b Longstock, Hampshire

Ref: HO107/1672/145 p9
Reg. District:   Stockbridge

I believe this is Ruth Goater who had Sarah Bunney c. 1818 and John Goater c.1826 prior to her marriage to George CARTER - she is listed as a widow on the census.

I am trying to work out how William HARDING is Ruth's grandchild - can't find any HARDING/ BUNNEY marriages.

Thanks for any help/ suggestions any one can give.

Best wishes

Maria   :)

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Lancashire Records Office lookup please
« on: Tuesday 07 May 13 14:52 BST (UK)  »
I know this is a long shot but if anyone is visiting the Lancs RO & has a spare few minutes I would be extremely grateful for a baptismal record lookup for Aaron Langton born (May time I think) in 1823 and christened at St Gregory's, Chorley. His parents should be Elizabeth Langton & Richard Hough.

Unfortunately encouraging two teenage boys to revise for their GCSEs prevents me making a trip myself.

Many thanks

Lancashire / Aaron Langton/Langden 1823 Chorley
« on: Friday 03 May 13 12:02 BST (UK)  »
Afternoon all

I am looking for a baptism for an Aaron Langton/ Langden c. 1823 in Chorley. I am told he was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Langton and Richard Hough.

I've had a look on the Lancs OPC site  and the parish records on FindMyPast without success.

I thought I'd found him on the census, a clogger with wife Catherine but it looks like this Aaron is the son of Henry & Frances Langton (HO107 piece 525 folio 2/27 page 11).

Many thanks

Good morning all,

I've received an email today from a distant relative in America advising that he has found a half sibling to my great x 3 grandfather, born to my great x 4 grandfather prior to his marriage.

He believes this to be the case as he has had a 12 marker Y DNA test with an ancestor of the illegitimate child.

Please can someone explain how the DNA test works and if it really would validate this new branch of the family tree.

Many thanks

Maria

London and Middlesex / Goater Middlemiss Marriage 1940 Paddington
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 12:01 BST (UK)  »
Morning all

I have found a marriage record for a Joan M Goater to Alexander G Middlemiss 1940 in Paddington.

Joan M Goater m Alexander G Middlemiss 1940 Paddington.

Is anyone researching/ has any links to these people?

I am interested in Joan as I believe her to be the daughter of Ada M Barrett & George Henry Charles Goater, born 1917 in Paddington. Her father GHC sailed for New Zealand in 1920 and never returned and I am trying to find out what happened to his wife Ada and daughter.

For background the previous thread re the Goaters is here :-

Armed Forces / William Goater, army number 2346 Staff Sergeant A.H.C
« on: Thursday 18 April 13 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Morning all

While indulging in my favourite habit of "googling" I have come across a gravestone and accompanying information from Netley Cemetery: -

http://www.netley-military-cemetery.co.uk/surnames-g/

In Loving Memory Of
William GOATER (2346)
Staff Sergt. A.H.C.
The Beloved Husband Of
Louisa Goater
Died October 28th 1882
Aged 27 Years

Having Survived His
Return From
The Egyptian Campaign
Only A Few Days

Please can someone help me identify which regiment he belonged to so I can identify him out of all the many William Goaters in my family tree. I have tried looking at the FindMyPast army records but am drawing a blank so far.

On the marriage front I can only find one marriage - to a Louisa Cooper but this only took place in the September quarter of 1882 so right before his death.

best wishes

Occupation Interests / Abbreviations on apprentice records
« on: Friday 12 April 13 14:11 BST (UK)  »
Afternoon all,

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I have been browsing apprentice records and have found several relating to my Goater family, but some of the abbreviations have me a bit puzzled: -

barb & c
cit & hab
but  - butcher?
whlw - wheelwright?
tay

Any thoughts would be great.

best wishes

Sussex / Help with a GOATER marriage please
« on: Wednesday 10 April 13 13:23 BST (UK)  »
Afternoon everyone,

I have found part of my Goater family on the 1911 census - Charles Goater, 57 an Estate Workman, Fanny, 44, wife and son (Charles) Harold aged 16. Also with them is Charles's sister Jessie Thomas, aged 44 and listed as married.

I believe this is Jessie Goater born 1866 in Bishop's Waltham, Hampshire but am struggling to find a corresponding marriage to a Mr Thomas. On the census form crossed out is says she has been married 25 years and has 3 children all still living.

The only marriage I can find for Jessie Goater and a Mr Thomas is in 1916 in St Giles to John B. Thomas.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

best wishes

Maria  :)
