Lancashire / St Mary The Virgin, Deane, Bolton churchyard
« on: Wednesday 20 March 13 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon all

Yesterday afternoon I had a really interesting ramble in St Mary's churchyard.

There are some fascinating old graves including some WWI headstones and a row of graves relating to the Pretoria Pit victims. It was very sad though to see how overgrown the grass was and some broken and leaning headstones.

I believe my ggg grandfather is buried at St Mary's and wondered if anyone had successfully found any family graves there and could give me some tips.

I'm assuming that I'll have to check the MIs for St Mary's to find the grave number but it's such a large area I'm hoping I'll get lucky & there is a gravestone.

best wishes

United States of America / Goaters in US census
« on: Tuesday 12 March 13 13:19 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon all

While looking for something else on the familysearch site I've come across a reference in the 1910 US census to a James L Goater, 38 born Maryland, wife Ida B, 36 born Georgia and son Milton J, 7 born Virginia - here's the link - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MPLW-M4N#

I'd be grateful if anyone can help me find or advise how to find James and Ida's marriage and any references to them on any earlier censuses.

Many thanks

Armed Forces / What details are on an army death certificate?
« on: Friday 15 February 13 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon all,

Sorry if this is a daft question but I have found a death in the GRO Army Death Indices and I am just wondering what details will be on the certificate. The death is in Egypt in 1882. I have been looking for this man for ages and would love to establish if this is him.

Many thanks

Evening all

While researching my extensive and often elusive Goater family I have come across references to a George Goater Ligare. There seems to be a lot of information available on the internet about his interesting life.

I am interested as to how his middle name came to be Goater and how/ if this connects to my family.

George' s date of birth is given as c.1821 in Winchester but I am struggling to find his birth or that of his father Isaac Ligare born in Derbyshire. If anyone can help with a birth for George and a marriage for his parents I would be very grateful.

George' s brother Charles W Ligare also had a really interesting life, ending up as a Surveyor General in New Zealand :)

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Goater Fox marriage Duffield Derbyshire
« on: Wednesday 09 January 13 13:44 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon all

I have found a marriage between George Gealen (Gealer on familysearch) Goater and Sarah Fox at St Alkmund's Church, Duffield 30/04/1810 on the Boyds Marriage Index, IGI and FreeReg.

The FreeReg entry states that George was from Duffield parish and Sarah was of St Nicholas's parish, Nottingham.

I am wondering if anyone has access to the Duffield records to confirm witnesses/ parents/ occupations etc,.

I am trying to see if this George Goater is the father of Alfred Goater born c.1819 in Ashby De La Zouch.

best wishes

New Zealand Completed Requests / James GOATER NZ Army WWI
« on: Monday 12 November 12 10:52 GMT (UK)  »
Morning all,

I've found a record on the NZ Archives for a James GOATER who was a member of the 9th Reinforcements Wellington Infantry Battalion, B Company.

His next of kin is listed as his mother, Mrs M Goater of Park Row, Nottingham. I have this family as part of my wider Goater family tree and believe this to be Maria Goater (nee Goodson) who was living at 25 Park Row, Nottingham at the time of the 1911 census with her daughter Henrietta.

I'm a bit mystified as I've never come across a James in the family. The only member unaccounted for is an Alfred Percy George Goater born 1871 in Nottingham who I am struggling to find on any census.

I've checked passenger lists and there is a Jas Goater, age unknown leaving London on the Athenic for NZ on 22/7/1910. He is listed as single & a farmer - which would perhaps tie in with his occupation of bushman on the army record? This doesn't tie in with the rest of his english family though (if he is the mysterious Alf PG) as they were all printers.

Can anyone advise how I find out more about James?

Many thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / GOATER/GOTER family muddle
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 09:27 BST (UK)  »
I seem to have got myself into a regular muddle with my GOATER/GOTER family from Sparsholt, Hampshire and wondered if SKS could help me out.

Thomas Goater son of Thomas & Elizabeth is baptised at St Stephen’s Sparsholt on28/11/1718 (from parish records - www.downs-benefice.hampshire.org.uk/benefice/sbapts1.pdf).

There are deaths for Thomas Sr. 16/11/1752 & Elizabeth 10/09/1753 (www.downs-benefice.hampshire.org.uk/benefice/sbur1.pdf).

In the marriage records for the parish there is a marriage 26/10/1742 for a Thomas Goter to Elizabeth Kember and subsequent baptisms appear for John Goater 09/09/1743, Betty 05/02/1745, Thomas 25/10/1748 & Ann 25/02/1753.

There are also baptisms for another couple Thomas & Mary Goater beginning in 1763 with James 12/06/1763, Sarah 08/11/1764, Jenny 21/09/1766, William 17/07/1768, Peter 28/01/1770 and Joseph 18/05/1744.

I’ve followed these lines forward but have just realised that I have given Thomas No. 2 the same birth date details & parents as Thomas No.1 – aagh!!!

Please can anyone see if they can find a possible birth for Thomas and a marriage for Thomas & Mary to help me untangle this family.

Many thanks

Maria

Australia / John Walter Goater
« on: Friday 03 August 12 14:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I wondered if anyone could help me with the following: -
John W. Goater appears in the 1940 US census in Denver aged 38 born in Australia. Also part of the household is his grandmother Mary Ann Goater.

He also appears in earlier US censuses with his grandmother but I cannot find him with his parents. I think his parents may be John Thomas Goater and Winifred but I would love to confirm this.

I’ve found his date of death – 14/04/1959 and his entry into the USA but can’t access anything else.

If anyone can help me with this or point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Best wishes

Maria  :)
