Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: William Ayling, Greatham
« on: Saturday 04 November 17 04:47 GMT (UK)  »
From the Eastergate parish (neighboiur to Aldingbourne) parish:

03/10/1790 Elizabeth William Anne AYLING
22/11/1791 William William Anne AYLING
11/04/1800 George William Ann AYLING
07/02/1802 Ann William Ann AYLING
28/08/1803 Emily William Ann AYLING
08/09/1805 Reuben William Ann AYLING
25/12/1807 Stephen William Ann AYLING

This is likely William Ayling (1767-1855) and Anne Faulkner who are having their other children baptized in Aldingbourne and perhaps also later in Broadwater/Worthing before Anne dies in 1816.

See "John Ayling (B. abt 1540) of Petersfield Hampshire & descendants Family Tree" on ancestry.com for the entire family line.

See my tree "John Ayling (B. abt 1540) of Petersfield Hampshire & descendants Family Tree" on ancestry.com (or message me for the .GED) for this entire family line. William likely born in Felpham (not Greatham: this was probably a census taker transcription or recording error in the 1851 census) to Thomas Ayling (1734-1794) and Elizabeth Greenwood. Thomas probably originally for nearby South Bersted. His father was likely John Ayling, born 1712 in South Bersted. John's father was Richard Ayling. He was born somewhere around 1680 and I suspect he came from Felpham.

I think William might have been born, but not baptized, in Felpham, the next parish south of Aldingbourne where he is married. The only source we have for his place of birth is via the 1851 census. The 1841 does not list parish. I am guessing that Greatham was transcribed in error for Felpham. I note further there is a marriage of Thomas Ayling (1734-1794) and Elizabeth Greenwood in South Bersted, the parish next door to Aldingbourne, in 1769. This is William's date of birth (based on census info). See https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.ayling/398/mb.ashx. Thomas resides in Aldingbourne and is buried there. Thomas' Will is available, but it is an Administration and not likely to mention a son. However, I will see if I can order it to confirm if a son William is mentioned. Thomas' father was likely John Ayling (B. 1712) of South Bersted. His father was likely Richard Ayling (B. abt 1680). I think the South Bersted and Aldingbourne Ayling families reach back further through Felpham. A lot of guess work but you can see the patterns by looking at the parish transcription compilation for Aylings. See https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.ayling/mb.ashx.

See "John Ayling (B. abt 1540) of Petersfield Hampshire & descendants Family Tree" for the entire family line (which includes two other large Ayling trees joining via marriage).

In reference to Orielbenfro's post about Albert Edgar Ayling (1922-1942). Albert was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. His paternal line likely goes:

Albert Ayling (1899-1867) of Portsmouth, mother Ann Beckett
William Ayling (1875-1941) of Portsmouth, mother Emily
William (1846-) of Meonstoke, Hampshire, mother Louisa Turner
William (1821-) of Portsea, Hampshire, mother Sarah
John (1797-1868) of Kirdford, Sussex (yes, it seems like a leap from there to Hants, but this is confirmed via census data. He was a lime burner and presumably following the work. Most of his children are baptized in nearby Chichester). Mother Varstey "Vashti" Hill of Wisborough Green, Sussex.
James (1744-1820) of Kirdford, Sussex

If anyone is on ancestry.com the tree for this family line is called "James Ayling (1744-1820) of Kirdford, Sussex Family Tree". It links through marriage to a very much larger Ayling tree going back to Petersfield, Hampshire in the 1500's called "John Ayling (B. abt 1540) of Petersfield Hampshire & descendants Family Tree".

I am not directly related to this family line.

Extensive and ongoing research into the AYLING surname at https://www.ancestry.ca/boards/surnames.ayling/mb.ashx.

Cheers,

Knightroots? Do you have a link? I had compiled the Bramshott records for Aylings here: https://www.ancestry.ca/boards/surnames.ayling/207/mb.ashx. I believe this group descends from John's son Phillip. His other sons were John (D. 1546) of Terwick, Sussex and Richard (D. 1545) of Woolbeding, Sussex who ended up as a burgess in Midhurst, Sussex. John Sr. may have been the reeve of Droxford Manor, Hants in the late 1400's. The family link is partially confirmed via the Book of Common Pleas when John has died and Phillip and his mother are suing the two brothers for coming over and stealing some of his money, household good, livestock, etc. See https://www.ancestry.com/boards/surnames.ayling/281/mb.ashx. I understand this is probably way to much info for you. Just posting in event someone comes along in future and sees this post :)

Hi there. Most Ayling trees are wrong. For example, the James who married Mary Freeborn was actually born in Heyshott in 1774. Mary died in childbirth. James moved most of the family to Brighton after that but was returned to East Dean for his burial in 1860. He is my 5th great grandfather. I have that line going back to John Aylyng (D. 1511) of Bramshott, Hampshire. Thanks for the reference to the census. I do know there was a line of Ayling bargemen in Houghton, Sussex, so perhaps there is a link there...

Jesse Ayling (1665-1710) has a stone memorial within St. Mary's in Buriton, Hampshire. It says:

"Near this place
lies interr'd the body
of Jesse Ayling
of this parish Mason
who died Decem 17 1710
aged 45
Also W. Hall who died
Sep 15 1751 Aged 60".

Jesse married Rachel Collins in Kirdford, Sussex in 1696. William Hall may have been Jesse's mason apprentice. When Jesse died Rachel then married William. She died in 1757. Her Buriton burials says : 'Widow Hall of Weston 15/3/1757.' She likely did the memorial for both.

Jesse's father is a guess (because the Buriton parish records being in the late 1690's), but there is a John Ayling paying hearth taxes in Buriton in 1665. John's father was likely Jesse Aylline (B. 1616) of East Meon.

See "John Ayling (B. abt 1540) of Petersfield Hampshire & descendants Family Tree" on ancestry.com for the entire line back to the 1500's in Petersfield, Hampshire and the many intermarriage lines going to the present.
