JM thanks for that. Maybe it is not my Margaret on that voyage at all  :( I only know she left 'with her sewing machine' some time after 1921. Family stories say to Australia. As she was a dressmaker going to Federal Mills seemed to fit.
Back to the drawing board  ???
Ros just checked births for Mary K Flatley again there is only one possible Mary Kathleen in 1906. Of course she may have been registered as Mary and there are a few of those. She married Thomas J Needham.

Thanks for trying Ros. I found possible marriages for Margaret to Young Pascoe and Newbon but no death in Victoria or UK to match these. Ursula Tooby returned to UK and died 1977. Mary Flatley returned by 1931 as she married then.
Guess Margaret will remain a mystery for now.

Hi Ros
Just to let you know I have spent a few hours searching uk bmd records and not had much luck there with the list of unusual names either. Found a few births, no marriages and only one death. Looked at Victoria records for Margaret but I found nothing either. Maybe she moved to another state.
Thanks for your help and I will keep searching.

Hi Ros
Thank you so much for the above info. This will give me plenty more to check. Just finding the newspaper articles is great as I have obtained a lot of info from English papers. It is possible Margaret returned to England but none of the surviving members of the family seem to know what became of her. As she was 41 when she arrived in Australia it is possible she lied about her age? Do you know if there are records held anywhere for staff at the mills or of Australian wills?
Thanks again. This will keep me busy for a few days.

Thanks for the above replies. I do have all the info on both the Mitchell and Kennedy families in the U.K. Margaret was not married when she left for Australia. It is what happened to her in Australia I am stuck with.

I am trying to trace any info about my great aunt Margaret (Maggie) Mitchell. She was born in Sunderland UK in 1885 the daughter of Andrew Mitchell and Hannah nee Kennedy. Margaret was a dressmaker and family stories say she left England with her sewing machine! I know she was still in UK in 1921 as she was witness at her sisters wedding. I have found a record of a Margaret Mitchell arriving in Melbourne from London February 1927 on the ship Otranto. Address in Australia is Federal Mills Geelong. This would fit with her occupation. I can find no further trace so any help or ideas would be gratefully received.

Many thanks to Phodgetts for the info and to Boo for the link. I have now confirmed births of the first 4 Kennedy children 😊😊

Thank you for all the above help. I have children of Ludwig Mackel as Christiana, George, Conrad, Henry and Louis. Christiana and George both in North Shields area. Henry and Louis in Sunderland. I am descended from the large family of Henry and Elizabeth.
I haven't been able to find anything about Conrad after his marriage. The mystery is what happened to him? From the above info it appears Margaret had Knaak children as early as 1861?? Why would she state spinster at her second marriage?
The above posts have given me a little more to look at but maybe I will never solve this mystery.
