Staffordshire / I have lost Benjamin LONDON
« on: Thursday 27 August 20 11:07 BST (UK)  »
Sorry for the length of this but I didn't want to leave out what I knew.

He was born 8 October 1845 and baptised at Ettingshall, Staffordshire  2 Nov 1845
Of Finney Well (Bilston)

1851 , Finney Well, Bilston

William LONDON head Mar 45 Stone Sawyer   b Birmingham, Warwickshire
Bella  35   b Darlaston, Staffs
William son 16  b Darlaston
George son  10 b Bilston, Staffs
Elizabeth dau 8  b Bilston
Benjamin  son 5, b Bilston
John son 3, b Bilston

1861, Finney Well, Bilston

Samuel BARRETT 45 Collier b Wolverhampton, Staffs
Isabella ‘do’ wife 48  b Darlaston
George L. ‘do’ son 20  Coal Labourer b Bilston
Benjamin L  ‘do’ 16   Iron Forgeman  b Bilston
John L ‘do’ ‘do’ 13 Labourer b Bilston
Isabella L ‘do’ 8  Labourer b Bilston
Samuel BARRATT son 7 b Bilston
Sarah ‘do’ dau 4 b Bilston

In 1863, Benjamin LONDON an under puddler was bruised in a boiler explosion

11 Sep 1865 he married at St Stephens, Willenhall

Benjamin LONDON  20 Bachelor, Puddler, Willenhall father = William a miner (think he has said this because Samuel Barre/att was a miner)
Ellen ROBERTS 18  Willenhall, father=  Edward a miner

Witnesses William PERKIN & Ellen EVANS

William is a regular church witness
Ellen EVANS, Ellen ROBERTS and Benjamin LONDON all signed with their MARK

Then there is this Benjamin.  I don’t think he can be the same one.
Occupation is out, and there is conflicting information regarding his age at death neither of which  is correct for a 1845 birth. in 1866 our one would have been about 21.

Wolverhampton Chronicle and Staffordshire Advertiser 11 July 1866

Upper Gornall
Shocking and fatal Accident. - on Monday evening at the Horse Shoe Inn, Mr W. H. Phillips, deputy coroner, held an inquest on the body of Benjamin London, a brewer, age 36. From evidence it appeard that he died from injuries received through falling into some wort, where he was brewing at Dudley Wood.

GRO Reference 1866, S Quarter in DUDLEY Volume 06C page 38

there is this birth. I cannot find a baptism. If he is Benjamin's son that is another reason the July 1866 death cannot be him.

David LUNDON, 1867 D qtr in Wolverhampton, Vol 06B page 529 MMN ROBERTS

He seems to be with his grandparents in 1871 at Wolverhampton Street, Bilston

Edward ROBERTS head mar 53  Miner, coal. N Wales Chirk(?)
Ann ‘do’ wife marr 46 N. Wales Oswestry    ( Scrawled in the margin is Denbigh)
David ROBERTS son 19 unm Moulder Journeyman.   b Bilston, Staffs as are the rest
William  ‘do’ 16 miner Coal
Richard ‘do’ 14 miner Coal
Edward J ‘do’ 5
John ‘do’ 2
Sarah A ‘do’  it could say Mar or unmar. But I think the former. 23  Visitors
Ellen LONDON Dau 11
David  ‘do’ Grandson 3

the age of Ellen is quite clear on the census but I am confident her details have been swapped for Sarah A’s.
It definitely does not say Wid next to either of their names

Ellen has a new ‘husband’

at 1 Hornby Street, Pendleton, Salford are

Thomas ROBERTS head, 38 Coal miner b North wales ……..
Ellen ‘do’ 38 Bilston Staffs
Willem E ‘do’ son 7 b Bilston
Robert ‘do’ 5 b Lancashire …….
John J ‘do’ son 2 b Lancashire …….
David LONDON Wife’s son 13 Miners …….   b Bilston
Edward ROBERTS Wife’s father 62 Coal Miner  b Chirk
Edward ROBERTS Wife’s father’s son 15 Coal miner b Bilston
John Thomas ROBERTS Wife’s fathers’ son 12 b Bilston

Ellen and the family can be followed through to her probable death in 1917
From the 1881 census she must have been with Thomas ROBERTS from 1873 ish, and in 1911 they say they have been married 28 years.

But I can see no marriage.

So - can anyone see where Benjamin went?

The Common Room / Ordering NLS Maps

Has anyone ordered a Digital version of any of the NLS maps?

Could you then blow up one section at sufficient resolution  to print for the ringbinder of 'Stuff" that we collect?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Title Heading of Parish Register
« on: Monday 24 August 20 10:16 BST (UK)  »
This is not at all important, but I wondered what it said.
it is the Title Heading of the parish register for St Peter's Wolverhampton

Does it say  "The Beggeter Book"?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1613 Baptism
« on: Monday 24 August 20 08:30 BST (UK)  »
this query relates to this thread

What is the name of the child being baptised here?

Zachariah SEAVERNE  (variation of SIVORN and other spellings - I have even seen it transcribed starting with a G)  was baptised at St Peter's Wolverhampton 9 May 1658, the son of Zachariah.

There are other baptisms to Zachariah  (no wife named of course  :-\)

Mary 1649
Ann 151
Elizabeth 1655
Elinor 1662

Some on-line trees say Zachariah senior is the son of Humphrey SIVORN who was a Tanner in Wolverhampton

I can see why they might assume this as he appears in the PRs around the right period.

eg a son Thomas baptised 20 Feb 1624,
Humfrey son of Humfrey was buried 7 May 1625

and there is some sort of Bond for Humfrey Severne of Wolverhampton 1628 at Staffordshire archives.

However, I do not see a baptism  for Zachariah senior.  If Mary is his eldest child, then 1649-say 20-30 = Looking for a baptism 1619-1629
There is a PCC will for a Humfrey Seaverne of Birmingham in March 1661 which leaves all to a woman named Elizabeth TAYLOR, with no indication she is his daughter or mention of any other children or grandchildren. So if that is Humfrey of Wolverhampton, it seems unlikely Zachariah is his son, as he still has Elinor baptised in 1662.  so still alive, and if not, then at least one grandchild, (Z junior is).

Can anyone see a baptism for Zachariah senior before say 1630.
Online Trees have a wife Susannah - no surname.  or Johanna Clark. no hint as to where that information comes from.

I cannot help thinking the Susannah comes from Susannah Honeyman who was the second wife of Zachariah junior and married in 1697.

but whatever the case, I have not found a marriage for which ought to be prior to 1649.

Thank you
