Hi Ros,

I think you have found another Janet Anderson born to John and Margaret Anderson who I didn't know about? The Janet Anderson born 1855 in Dalgety, Fife, is the daughter who died in February 1857 a month before they emigrated.

The newspaper articles you attached state Janet Barrett died age 63 in 1922, making the year of birth approx 1859. I'm guessing a second daughter named Janet was born in Australia? Fascinating stuff you have found!

The ages most have lived to is amazing!

Hi Ros,

The info you have supplied is amazing and very much appreciated! I was aware of some of the info however most of it is all new. I had read about death of 18 year old Robert Gordon Fowler during 1st WW but didn't know any of other family members involvement during both WW's.

This all started with a request for info on Andrew Paton Anderson born on a boat bound for Australia in 1857 and has developed into a whole new family line! Thanks again for the info and I'm now busy catching up with info supplied. Fantastic!

Hi Ros,

This is what I have from research so far. 6 children born in Australia that I have a record of to date but it sounds like you have found even more!

Hi Ros,

My mistake on ages regarding passenger list, you are right with 25 and 26; not 26 and 27 as I listed.
Occupation as per your passenger list, Dunfermline was a industrial centre for the weaving industry with several large weaving factories in the town.

No record of 'Bruce' in any records I have.

John Anderson, born 02/04/1831 parents were John Anderson (my 3rd great grand uncle) born 1809, Carnock, Fife and Janet Anderson born (own name is also Anderson with no family connection that I've found) born 1810 in Dunfermline.

This John and Janet Anderson (Andrew Paton Anderson grandparents) also emigrated to Australia in 1863 on the 'Hotspur' arriving on 5 December . They had 5 children with them and came from Crossgates in Fife which is next door to Dunfermline.

Will check records I have to date regarding brothers and sister of Andrew Paton Anderson.

Had another look through various sites to establish a bit more around Andrew Paton Anderson.

His parents, John Anderson, age 26 and Margaret Anderson, age 27 boarded the 'Glen Isla' ship in Liverpool, England on 16th March 1857. The 'Glen Isla' arrived in Sydney on 2nd July 1857. Andrew Paton Anderson was born on the voyage.

John Anderson and Margaret Anderson (Paton) had married in Dunfermline, Fife in 1853. Have now found out they had a daughter, Janet Anderson born 1855. I couldn't find Janet Anderson on the passenger list of the 'Glen Isla' as only John Anderson and Margaret Anderson were recorded with no family and so went looking for a death cert which confirmed Janet died aged 21 months on 18 February 1857 in Dunfermline. This was only 4 weeks before the couple left Scotland to emigrate to Australia. Such a sad story.

Looks like after arrival in Australia, John and Margaret Anderson had another 5 children in addition to Andrew Paton Anderson.

Death 1970
Thomas Oliver ANDERSON aged 71 reg 1970/ 41315

Ros

Ros,

I think this may be a different Thomas Oliver Anderson. I found a birth certificate on FindMyPast for Thomas Oliver Anderson born 1885 NSW confirming the parents as Andrew and & Annie Maria Anderson. I also found a death cert for Thomas Oliver Anderson in 1952 in NZ, confirming age as 67 which ties in with 1885 birth.

I only found this due to your research and last entry which stated when Agnes Anderson died in 1955, she was a sister in law of the late Thomas Oliver Anderson. Thanks again for your research which is massively assisting me to progress this part of the family!

Rosball,

I have been researching my family tree for approx 2 years and it was only in last couple of months I found an Australian connection to the Anderson side of the family. The Anderson's hardly left the county of Fife between 1800's - 2000's and now we've found a whole new avenue to explore in Australia!

Must have been a massive leap of faith to leave their homeland and coal mining communities in Scotland and move to Australia in 1857 for a better life. For Andrew Paton Anderson to born on the journey only adds to the story!

Thanks for all your help with this. The info you have provided is amazing. I will now update my tree with all info found.

Thanks again to you, Crisane & Giblet for taking the time to help me progress an Australian link which has really taken shape over a few hours!
