A bit more digging and I think I found my man in the uniform.. Ernest Wood Christie brother to Barbara Grant (n. Christie) He died in France during WW1, while serving with the 48th Highlanders of the Canadian Army. Information comes courtesy of the Commonwealth War Graves Commision and the Canadian Virtual Memorial

These people are Grants.. my GG Grandparents James Pirie and Barbara Jane (n. Christie) and their sons {L-R} George Shepherd, James (G Grandfather),  and William Christie Grant. So I'm not sure if the man in the army uniform is a Grant after all as dates dont add. George is named on NZ War Ballot lists but I cannot find a service record. So the hunt continues.. the family came to NZ in 1921 when George was 6 but he doesn't look that in this photo, so maybe 2/3 years after 1921.

At the moment I have no name for this man. We believe he's family, possibly a Grant. Whether he came to NZ or stayed in Scotland is a mystery so if someone can help me date this photo or even hazard a guess on the uniform I would be grateful.
Thanks

The Common Room / Polish or German
« on: Tuesday 14 March 17 08:33 GMT (UK)  »
My GGG Grandfather Friederich Adrian and his family came out to New Zealand on the Fritz Reuter in 1875. They originated from Christburg Prussia. A country no longer. My question is this, Is there a way to work out whether they were Polish or German, as I have been getting conflicting information. Any suggestions on how to go about working this out are better than my nothing.
Thanks

Hi JK
A site called Find A Grave can help with your request. If you create a memorial for them and request a headstone photo. They have volunteers that take photos when you can't. Hope this helps.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Charles Fergussen

Hi Hereford
If you google Auckland Online Cenotaph it gives a list (not complete) of those who served and some details with the occasional photo. There was a Charles listed from Gisborne. It looks like he signed up around 1940 as he's listed as single. But as in everything it's all in the spelling. Good luck.
