Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Wilkinsons and Dewhursts. Which ones?
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 06:00 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks, people.
To whiteout7 -  have that 1855 Baptism. I know it's two years after the birth but that does happen. There's a Richard but not Anne among the children. As for Mary Dewhurst's baptism, I have a different one on 13 Apr 1823 at Samelsbury (daughter of Thomas Dewhurst and Catherine walker). This is what I mean about many families with these names.
To Kay 99 - That's the marriage I have for Robert's parents. Bride and groom's parents match. Is it most likely?

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / James Henry Smith, born 1852
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 03:48 BST (UK)  »
My 2nd GG's marriage certificate (Sydney 1876) says he was 24 & born in Jersey in 1852. He lists his father as Joseph and occupation as a mariner. However, I cannot find any record of a Jersey birth. I did find a record from the 1861 census which lists a James Smith (17) as a sailor and a Joseph Smith (41) butcher. However, the census says they were both born in England, which conflicts with the marriage certificate. Not that these were always accurate, or that people told the truth. He does lists his address as "all around the Australian coast"!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Wilkinsons and Dewhursts. Which ones?
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 03:36 BST (UK)  »
Trying to investigate the line of my 2nd great grandfather was Robert Henry Wilkinson, born at Walton Le Dale 1853 to Henry William Wilkinson and Mary Dewhurst. Beyond that I'm stumped, as there are so many of these surnames. Other information: Robert immigrated to Australia in 1875. He married Jemima Rice in 1875. They had 13 children.

The information I have on his parents are: Henry W. Wilkinson, born Mellor 1820. Mary Dewhurst b Samelsbury 1823. Am I on the right track.

I have so many doubts. Beyond Henry and Mary I am only guessing.

Thanks for any help.

Sutherland / Re: Christiana Munro, daughter of John and Margaret. Who were they?
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 00:35 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks to all those who have provided information. However, it seems nothing is definite. Some say Christiana's father is from Logie (could be any of a number of places). However, I'm sure it says Lossie, who could be short for Lossiemouth. I have attached Christiana's marriage certificate. Her children were: Henry Edward, Robert, Margaret, Isabella Stevenson, John James, William George, Charles Ross, Mary Anne.

Sutherland / Christiana Munro: from Sutherland or Ross & Cromarty?
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 00:19 BST (UK)  »
Who was she? Christiana Munro emigrated to Sydney aboard the Lady McNaughton in 1838 (no record of departure). Christy, who said she was a "native" of Dornoch, arrived in Sydney in 1839 and was listed as a dairymaid, age 24 (so born around 1816) to a John and Margaret Munro. She said here father was from Lossie. She came as part of Donald McDonald's family, who were from Dornoch. I've tried for three years to trace her lineage. She had eight children in Australia with an English convict, Edward Everson. But despite that no one connected to the Everson family have any information. Hope someone can help, please.

Sutherland / Missing Munros of Ross & Cromarty

Been trying for several years to find the parents of Christiana Munro, born about 1816, who emigrated to Sydney aboard the Lady McNaughton in 1838. Her arrival card said she was a "native" of Dornoch. Father was John of Lossie. Mother was Margaret. Christie came in the care of Donald McDonald. Many searches, many records, none definitive. Christiana wen on to marry an English convict, Edward Everson. No one researching this line has any information.

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Re: FREE BEER. Lookup request: James Thomas Smith

Hi, Debra
Thanks for your reply.
I don't have any of his children's birth certificate. However, they are Jospeh Henry James Smith (1876) and Mary Catherine (1878). It's possible there is also a James Smith, another un-named male and an unnamed female.
Not sure what you mean about his birthplace changing. He just states on his marriage certificate Jersey (UK). Impossible to tell when or where he died, as there are so many James Smiths that died in Sydney (in any given year). I have an idea he and his wife Mary split, as the children were sent to homes, leading to a life of crime for their son, Joseph. I tried tracking down records from the institutions but I need to be in Sydney to do that.
Regards,
Greg

Blimey, there is so much information her. Thanks to everyone. The information from the 1841 Census and follow up with 1851 is interesting. However, the mother, Margaret is missing. Quite possible they moved from Elgin to Dornoch, as Christy said she was from there and her father from Lossie. Here us a scan of the marriage certificate. The six children from the marriage were: Henry Edward, Robert, Margaret, Isabella, John James, William George.

Hi, Stewart. Your efforts are worth a beer :). I had actually gone down all those paths, except the christchurch tree. No death date (or clue). And you can imagine all the James Smith who died in Sydney between the average dates deaths. I think there was 18 pages. Unfortunately, the name Smith is a nuisance. :) Regards, Greg.
