The Lighter Side / Re: categoriy assigned to a woman at marriage 1674

Generally just an unmarried woman, a spinster. By extension it would also suggest a virgin.

I'm amazed by this, I've never seen anything like it.

I'm sure we've all come across a multitude of interesting terms being used on baptism records for illegitimate children (usually pre-1813)...but on a census?  ;D

I'm struggling with a few bits of the first extract, but I think the second says:

"them by my loving uncle Mr Lamberd Russell and my brother in law Thomas Brian and by
the survivor of them Item I give unto my said daughter Elizabeth one bed in the best chamber
ready furnished with the best joined bedstead upon [which?] it lyeth with the table in the parlour
and twelve joined stools thereto belonging Item I give unto my said daughter Anna two
feather beds ready furnished in the kitchen chamber with a long chest table"

In the first extract - the items left to Marie - at the end of the first line it looks to me like "two pairs of these two", which doesn't make sense, but could it be an error?

On the following line, the "fine table..." item doesn't look like it begins with a C, if you compare with words such as chamber and cupboard. It looks like it ends with "athes". Following that, could Marie be the lucky recipient of "one pair of fine pillow coates"? An archaic term maybe.

The Common Room / Re: Incomplete banns of marriage
« on: Monday 09 January 17 18:03 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for all the replies. I  forgot to say in the original post that I couldn't find any trace of the marriage in the parish of Prescot or any in the vicinity.

Esther Seddon was a widow - and a widow of that name is buried in Prescot in 1775.

The Common Room / Incomplete banns of marriage

Hello - two of the records on the attached page of marriages from a parish register are incomplete - it appears the banns were read twice and then there is no further note.

Does this indicate the marriages did not take place?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / 1790 marriage in Rotherham
« on: Saturday 07 January 17 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
William Austwick married Martha Brambley on 19th July 1790 at All Saints Church in Rotherham.

I've seen the bishop's transcript of this marriage and various others, but is there a way to look at the original record without travelling to Yorkshire? Specifically I'm interested in whether it states a parish of origin for Martha.

Thanks for any advice

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Missing York records - Thornton family
« on: Thursday 22 December 16 18:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, findmypast appears to be very good for York parish records, but I’m struggling with one family who must fall into a gap in the coverage there.

William Thornton was born c.1779 to Peter and Margaret Thornton, maiden name Jackson. I can't find any trace of this baptism.

Peter and Margaret appear to have married in 1777 but findmypast does not specify in which parish.

Peter himself was baptised in Holy Trinity Micklegate, while William later married in St John Ousegate. Does anyone have access to parishes registers from the 1770s/1780s that are not on findmypast? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

One of my favourite turns of phrase that I've found accompanying a baptism of an illegitimate child is "the father she confesseth not".
