Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Thrulines suggesting half-sibling relationship
« on: Wednesday 15 December 21 00:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, attached is a suggested relationship between myself and a DNA match - we share Susannah as a 3xgreat grandmother.

(The DNA match's tree ends at Mary while mine goes back further to Susannah and beyond)

Thrulines is suggesting that my ancestor Robert and his sister Mary were half-siblings. Is this based on the fact that our shared DNA is less than would be expected for two people sharing a 3xgreat grandparent, with the same number of generations between?

I have suspected Robert and Mary were not full siblings, should I take this as the best evidence I'm likely to get?

Thanks for any guidance

Armed Forces / RAOC 1940s/50s - help with forms
« on: Tuesday 26 October 21 15:01 BST (UK)  »
Hello, can anyone help me with a couple of queries about these forms - these are the only documents I have about my grandfather's time in the RAOC.

1. Firstly, are these forms him effectively leaving the army? He had married the year before.

2. Regarding his unit - it looks like he was in the 15th AFV but on the first form 'atl D/RWF' is also written. I know RWF is Royal Welch Fusiliers - does this mean the 15th AFV was attached to this regiment?

3. Would he have lived on the base where his unit was stationed?

4. His rank is given as WS/Cpl - what does the WS part mean?

5. He joined aged 15 and turned 18 in 1942. I know he went to North Africa in the War, would this only have occurred after his 18th birthday?

Thank you for any help

Lancashire / Re: Location of Green Street and Lincoln Street - Liverpool
« on: Saturday 04 September 21 10:45 BST (UK)  »
Thank you all so much

After someone said Green Street ran between Hornby and Portland, I checked my maps again and embarrassingly it is marked - in my defence, in very small text! It originally seems to have been a short street between the aforementioned two at the Great Howard Street end.

Thanks to Shaun for that Goad map - I can now see why Lincoln Street isn't marked on most earlier maps, it's tiny.

Lancashire / Location of Green Street and Lincoln Street - Liverpool
« on: Friday 03 September 21 18:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm trying to work out where Lincoln Street and Green Street were in the Scotland ward/St Martin district of Liverpool, in the 1860s.

Green Street

Green Street still exists, running between Vauxhall Road and Limekiln Lane. Above is Hornby Walk (showing where Hornby Street was) and below is Burlington Street. What I find confusing is that Green Street is called Portland Street on 1890 and 1906 maps, but both streets appear on the 1871 census, one following the other on the enumeration schedule. Was Green Street partially renamed for a period?

Lincoln Street

This street was in the same area - in the registration subdistrict of St Martin. I have no idea where it was and can't find any information about it.

Thank you for any help!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Printed latin text help

Hello, as this is printed I think I can make out the jist of it, but I just want to check because it seems to have a surprising sentence, if I've worked it out correctly.

It's about a student at the English College in Rome.

There are a few abbreviations in front of Thomas Fitzherbert's name and one in front of Cardinal Farnesi's - I assume these are just honorifics.

Thank you for any help  :)

Hello, could anyone give me a quick precis of the attached - it relates to a 1713 will written by John Ashburner, a mariner, of Aldingham in Lancashire).

In the will he leaves everything to his mother Isabella Ashburner (of Aldingham) and nominates his uncle William Boulton (of Wapping, London) as executor.

Thank you

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Missing baptisms in Sheffield
« on: Wednesday 28 April 21 13:09 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon, I have a Sheffield family for whom I can find no baptisms (besides their first child).

I'm wondering if anyone has similar experience and has found the answer in a source unavailable online - I have tried FindMyPast, Ancestry and sites such as the Sheffield Indexers.

It is the family of John and Sarah Johnson (nee Rowbotham). They were married in 1821 at Sheffield. The children born in Sheffield:

Sarah Ann born 1826 (and baptised at St Peter's)
Maria born c.1828
Thomas born c.1829
George Wainwright born c.1835
John T. born c.1837
Mary Emma born 1838

I wonder if they were members of a smaller protestant denomination/non-conformists of some kind. The children who married did so in Anglican churches, although my ancestor George's children are also missing from baptism registers.

Thanks for any advice

Mike
