Europe / Re: von DITTMER family...Germany to South Australia

“von” in German means “from”, or “of”. So the family originally came “from Dittmer”.

Naturalisation papers for Hermann born 1832 give his native place as Prussia, Germany.

He arrived in 1857 on the ship “Peter Godeffroy”. Passenger list gives his residence as Uekermunde Prussia.

The reason I asked if she had returned home, was because I found no marriage for her in the USA and she was not in the 1940 census. I am not surprised you found her in Ireland.
I wonder if she was sent to "look after" or "help" her sick Aunt? It looks as if she left the USA soon after her aunt died.

By the way, there is a photo of Mary attached to her USA naturalization records.

Additional information .....
Margaret SULLIVAN married 25 Oct 1906 in Lexington Massachusetts to James Joseph SCANNELL.
James was born 24.12. 1877 Queenstown Ireland. Emigrated 1898; naturalization 1919.
2 Sons: John born 9 Oct 1910, and Joseph Anthony born 28 Aug 1917.

If the person is still living you must remove her name.

John Ratliff senior died in Howland on 6 March 1842.
He appears on the 1830 and 1840 census in Howland.
There is a will for him available on Ancestry – he mentions his wife Mary, his son John junior and his 2 daughters Rachel Reeves (wife of Archibald) and Betsy Earle.

The daughter Rachel, according to the census, was born in Delaware abt 1789

Warren Trumbull County May 3rd 1817
Marriage contract between John Ratliff junior and Betsy Wilson of Howland

Her grave marker suggests Elizabeth’s birth about 1798
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/81900493/elizabeth-ratliff

The 1860 and 1870 census gives Elizabeth place of birth as Pennsylvania, and year of birth abt 1799.

From the census records you can see that John Ratliff was a similar age to his wife, and also born in Pennsylvania. From the marriage record you know that his father was also named John.

Not only did I not find anything related to Thomas Tolson in Wiltshire (or nearby), but the surname TOLSON just does not appear in Wiltshire.  It is a name related to Yorkshire. I did see a very few TOWLSON names in Wiltshire, but no Thomas.
Also I could not see any military records to T. Tolson.
What a shame the original marriage record does not seem to be available to view - it might yield something more?
I'm interested to see what someone else can find.

Margaret Scannell appears in the 1930 census for the last time.
Her obit published 1 Jan 1934, in the Boston Globe.

Is there any chance Mary returned home to Ireland?

I would not start a new thread, (yet). Allow some time for those already following to look into the questions you have just posed.
I will see what I can find today.
