Many thanks to you all for your advice which I will follow up in due course and please accept my apologies for my tardy reply but for some reason I did not get the usual email telling me someone had answered  my post.

James Dawe was in partnership with one William Wilks and together they built two hotels financed under a joint mortgage one the Victoria at Lingdale opened 1877 and the other the Commercial Hotel at Boosbeck which was opened around 1879. Wilks ran the Victoria Hotel at Lingdale and Dawe as we have seen the Commercial Hotel at Boosbeck. Now in 1881 it was put up for auction as advertised but did not sell. These were very difficult economic times in the area and both men struggled to keep their heads above water. Dawe left Wilks in the lurch around  1883 supposedly emigrating to America which it seems is now confirmed. Wilks carried on but was to face the bankruptcy court in 1886 after things caught up with him. He took the reins of the Commercial Hotel for a short while after. I am writing the history of Lingdales two hotels the Lingdale Hotel and the Victoria Hotel but as ever family history comes into it.

Hi

I am interested in proving whether a James Dawe, Publican late of Boosbeck North Yorks emigrated to the USA around 1883. Currently I don't have access to any of the online subscription databases so would appreciate any assistance in proving this. James Dawe br 1844 Birthplace: Llwanick, Cornwall, Publican Boosebeck in  1881 wife Ann Wilks.

Many thanks in anticipation

World War One / Re: John Thomas Knaggs WW1
« on: Friday 04 February 22 10:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

It would seem John Thomas Knaggs survived WW1 as  have just found him in the 1921 living locally at at Robinson St Skelton in Cleveland and still working at the mine as a blacksmiths striker!

Still a mystery over is death but at least it narrows it down to between 1921 and 1939.

Hi

The results of my research project into the history of the village of Lingdale, Cleveland is now available on the Lingdale History website:

https://alisonsmall32.wixsite.com/lingdalehistory/newspaper-articles.

As well as narrating the villages early history it contains a large number of names and some biographical info which will be of interest to many family historians.

The village of Lingdale was established in the 1870s when an Ironstone
Mine was sunk nearby and accommodation was urgently needed for its
expanding workforce. People seeking work had traveled from far and
wide in an era often recalled as the Cleveland Klondike. Transient
workers passed through but many other people set down roots within the
shadow of the mine, forming a community and Lingdale was born.

The  articles have been extracted from local and national
newspapers for the period 1871 to 1881. They illustrate the many
trials and tribulations of its earliest settlers before the villages first census of 1881.

It will also be shortly available on the Cleveland Family History society website and Land of Iron (Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum) sites https://landofiron.org.uk/

Should anyone have difficult accessing it please message me.
