When I did my researches I did cover a much wider time frame, but thank you for your suggestion.  The death certificate definitely says 78 years so the Cornwall Gazette has probably just reversed the figures to make 87!

No, I didn't know that but it could explain everything and I'll certainly follow that up.  Thank you very much.

Yes, I realise that but it doesn't necessarily mean that he was definitely alive; if he'd deserted his family they might not have known if he was alive or dead.  I have the marriage certificate for Charles and Rosetta as they were my paternal grandparents!

I suppose he could have been but that still wouldn't account for his missing death.  The only Charles Willmott born c 1835 on the Death Indexes is the one that wasn't him!  One of his sisters did marry and move to Australia so it's possible he went there and I've heard a rumour, but only a rumour, that he spent time in Scotland.  Thanks for your message

No informant as such, wording in the relevant column is "Certificate received from Arthur C. Langham, Deputy Coroner for Southwark. Inquest held 9th October 1896". Records of the inquest no longer exist.  On the death certificate Olivia, who died from chronic bronchitis, is stated to have been the wife of Charles Henry Willmott - obviously there was some confusion as Charles Henry was the eldest child, possibly he was the family member dealing with the formalities.  Unfortunately the place of death doesn't help as the address given is that of the Workhouse infirmary.

Thank you for your interest

Please does anyone know the details for the birth of Charles Oldham, tailor, born c 1765.  His age of 78 years when he died in 1843 tallies with his age of 76 on the 1841 census for Padstow, Cornwall, when the column headed "whether born in same county" was marked with a clear Y for yes.  I have all the other information I need for Charles' family, right down to his greatx6 grandchildren, but cannot find his baptism/birth despite perusing the registers (mostly the originals) for all Cornish parishes.

Charles Emmanuel Willmott, a baker, was born Islington 13/10/1835.  He is on all the censuses up to and including 1881 when he is shown with his wife Olivia, nee Brider, and their 5 children.  I have been unable to find Charles on subsequent censuses although Olivia is on the 1891 where she is described as wife, rather than widow.  When Olivia died in 1896 she was once again described as wife.  I have twice searched through all the original Index volumes up until 1935 when he would have been 100 but without success.  Does anyone know when and where Charles Emmanuel died?  Please note he is not the Charles Willmott, born c1835, whose death, aged 83, was registered 28/12/1917 West Ham (South Leyton sub-district).  Although the dates of both men match censuses and information on the death certificate for that Charles prove that he was the one born in Cambridgeshire.

I think the marriage you're looking for is the one between John Nevill and Mary Brider Kennington St. Mark in 1837.  She was the daughter, bapt. 12.7.1818 Portsea St. Mary, of Joseph Brider/Brida and Fortune Cooper nee Wyatt.
