Lancashire / William and Ellen Beaver of Liverpool born abt 1805
« on: Sunday 05 July 20 00:16 BST (UK)  »
I am looking to find out what happened to William and Ellen Beaver, William being a stone mason originally of Kirkby, Yorkshire, after the 1851 census. His married Ellen Toogood, a widow who was originally Ellen Potter, in Liverpool and had as far as I know two sons, George and Thomas who died as infants, and one daughter, Martha. Ellen had one son from her previous married, John Toogood.

I have managed to find them on the 1841 in Walton on the Hill, Liverpool on Hope Street, and on the 1851 at Howard Street. His surname here is listed as Bevars. I can find a marriage record of their daughter Martha to William Shepherd in 1868 but I can't find any of the family on the 1861 census.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Lancashire / Where to read Gore's Directories of Liverpool?
« on: Wednesday 01 July 20 15:33 BST (UK)  »

I am looking to find Gore's Directories of Liverpool, though only a few are listed on Ancestry. I'm particularly interested in 1803, 1805 and 1807.

Does anyone know if they can be accessed online? If not, what Archive / Library are they held in?

Thanks in advance.

Lancashire / Descendants of the Childe of Hale (1574 - 1623)
« on: Saturday 13 June 20 19:12 BST (UK)  »
As I'm sure many of you from the Merseyside area may have been told over the years, a John Middleton, more commonly known as the Childe of Hale, lived in Lancashire and was known for being one of, if not the tallest human being to ever live. He was reportedly 9ft 3, was born in 1578 and died in 1623.

I've been particularly captivated by this story since I was a little lad, and it recently popped into my head to see if I could learn more about the family of the big chap. I am particularly fascinated by the idea that he may have living descendants, or descendants that were also of heroic stature. His Wikipedia page does not specify whether or not the Childe married or not, and whether he had any extended family.

I managed to find a John Midelton born in Hale in 1574, which is the closest bet, but no image of the record is available.

Does any happen to have any more information?

Cheshire / Mary Randles born c1765 - which one?
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 10:57 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the correct baptism for Mary Randles, who married Samuel Nield,  a needlemaker, at St Peter's in Chester in 1786.

Mary Nield died at Greenway Street, Handbridge in 1834 aged 69, this puts her birth at around 1765. The Randles family are known even now as being a big fishing family from Handbridge and mostly from Greenway Street.

There are three possible births for Mary in Chester:

Mary Randles - daughter of William Randles St Oswald 1765

Mary Randles - daughter of Edward and Jane Randles St Mary on the Hill 1765

Mary Randles - daughter of Thomas and Hannah Randles St Mary on the Hill 1764. Died in 1767 (CAN BE RULED OUT)

Any ideas as to which of the two remaining is the correct one? St Mary on the Hill seems most likely as that is where Samuel Nield lived but I'm not 100% certain at the moment.

Cheshire / 22nd Regiment of Foot in County Cork
« on: Saturday 25 April 20 18:56 BST (UK)  »

I am researching Joseph Jones, an Agricultural labourer living on Greenway Street in Handbridge. In 1841, his household is listed as the following:

Joseph Jones      Male   50   Cheshire
Jane Jones      Female   45   Cheshire
Robert Jones      Male   15   Ireland
Joseph Jones      Male   14   Cheshire
Samuel Jones      Male   8   Cheshire
Mary Jones      Female   6   Cheshire
Ann Jones      Female   0   Cheshire

Looking at later censuses, Joseph's birthplace is listed as Hope (Yr Hob), Flintshire, and Jane's as Chester. Robert married an Eliza Dodd from Mickle Trafford and his birthplace in 1861 is listed as "Cork Ireland" (mistranscribed as Rutland on FindMyPast).

The most likely marriage of Joseph and Jane would seem to be 1820 in Chester, Jane's maiden name being Nield. Joseph is listed in 1820 as a Private of the 22nd Regiment of Foot.

Trying to tie this together, I looked at Irish parish records and found a baptism for Robert in Macroom, County Cork in 1822, son of Joseph Jones of the 22nd Foot.

Does anyone know what they were involved in while they were stationed there? I'm guessing it was something to do with the merging of Ireland with the United Kingdom and prevention rebellion, though I'd love to learn about the specifics.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Cheshire / William Friar / Fryer / Frier of Chester, born circa 1791
« on: Tuesday 21 April 20 17:07 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the baptism and death records for William Fryer / Friar / Frier who married Catherine Briscoe in St Oswald's parish, Chester, in 1808.

They had the following children:

Elizabeth
William
Henry
Ann
John
George
Mary
Jane

Also born in Chester.

He is recorded on the 1841 census as born in the county of Cheshire, and his surname as Frere, though died before the next census. In 1851 Catherine was living in the poor house with her son, also called William Fryer.

Unless I am not checking another possible spelling variation for his surname, I can't find a valid death in Chester for him between the two censuses.

Any help appreciated.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Lycett gentry family of Weston and Stafford
« on: Wednesday 08 April 20 00:56 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information related to the Lycett family, who I believe to have been part of the local gentry in the Stafford area. Francis Lycett born about 1710, wife of Ann Thompson, was my ancestor and he was a gentleman resident at Weston Hall. He left a substantial fortune in his will but as for his family origins and how he came into his money I am unsure.

His daughter Mary married my 5x great grandfather Archibald Campbell, PhD.

I believe Francis' parents are Joseph and Isabella (or Elizabeth) Lycett.

Any more information about Francis, or his ancestors would be much appreciated.

Cheshire / Fate of Elizabeth, wife of John Youd
« on: Sunday 05 April 20 19:35 BST (UK)  »
William Youd was born in Doddleston, Cheshire in 1794, son of John Youd and Elizabeth Reynolds, who seem to have married the previous year, also in Doddleston.

However, I am unable to find any other children of John and Elizabeth. All of the other Youds born in Doddleston to a father named John have a mother listed Mary, though I can't find a relevant death for Elizabeth in the 1790s. There is a death for an Elizabeth Youd, wife of Thomas Youd, but that seems to be it.

There is a marriage of a John Youd and Mary Chamber in Hope, Flintshire in 1797, but John is listed as a bachelor and not a widow.

What is going on? Any help would be much appreciated.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Family Tree DNA & Privacy
« on: Thursday 05 March 20 18:30 GMT (UK)  »

Hi there,

not sure if this should go under "Off Topic" as it is not a technical question about DNA, but rather about privacy.

I have been very into "paper genealogy" and tracing ancestors through records for several years, but am becoming interested in venturing into DNA, particularly the Y-111 Test offered by FamilyTreeDNA.

However, what has held me back from getting DNA tests is privacy concerns. I do not like the idea of my DNA being sold to third parties or given over without my expressed permission.

Would anyone be able to share their experience with using Family Tree DNA and whether they are a safe company to use? I notice there is a news article entitled "We will never sell your DNA" that was written about them, but that was in 2017 and their policies may have changed since then.

I can see nothing in their privacy policy which mentions whether or not they sell DNA.
