Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Monumental inscription
« on: Saturday 09 November 24 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
If I am in the wrong forum please advise.

A difficult inscription to read from a 1846 gravestone covered in moss, etc.  I have managed to transcribe the rest of the inscription.

The only three words I can read, are the last three ...for my or [thy] sake.

Over to you.

Regards,

Janet

Canon Basil Clarke Notebooks has this to say about St Cuthbert:

"St Cuthbert's is of red brick: date 1883-4.  Perkin Bulmer architects.  There is nothing to say about it."

Did you notice the date on the 'Building News' images, 1877.

Thank you arthurk for the information, and link.

When transcribing the St Cuthbert register, the following came to light:

The parish of St Cuthbert was formed out of part of the parish of St Peter, Hunslet Moor.  A temporary wood Mission Church, which was built with funding from the Leeds Church Extension Society in 1878, was erected on the site which was superseded by a brick church in 1883.  The St Cuthbert baptism register begins on 20 June, 1878, with the entries being recorderd in the St Peter register until 4 September, 1880.

According to an item in the ‘Building News’, February, 1880, “The parish of St Cuthbert has been recently formed out of part of the parish of St Peter, Hunslet Moor.”

This probably refers to the parish of St Peter being formed from the parish of St Mary, Leeds, in 1878.

Janet

Thank you to all who replied.

I am drawn to believe that John was the son of the now Mrs. Asquith, and probably Mr. Asquith's step-son.

I suppose we will never know with certainty.

Until we meet again.

Regards,

Janet
