Hello,
In a prominent position on a roof pediment over the front doorway of the Cellar Bar, Batley, sits a stone dog.  image attached.
Do you know the purpose or significance of the dog, and do you know the history of the building.
Also over the portico of the same entrance is a carved bust of a male.  Any idea who this bust might be of?

Regards,

Janet

Hello David,

thank you for having a go. I can see some of the words now.

I believe History Hen has photographed graveyards in the area.  I have PM'd but, unfortunately, she is rarely online.

I shall persue your other suggestion.

Regards,

Janet

Hello,

A difficult inscription to read from a 1846 gravestone covered in moss, etc.  I have managed to transcribe the rest of the inscription.

The only three words I can read, are the last three ...for my or [thy] sake.

Over to you to enhance the inscription
Regards,

Janet

Hi Zefiro,
As you suggested I have uploaded a request to the restoration forum.  I have to wait for approval.
Thank you.

Hi Pennines,

In the first instance, I contacted the Church, local FHS and FHG who do not have any MIs for the graveyard.

Hi Boo,

I uploaded an edited version of one of those images.

This is the wording which precedes the inscription:

SACRED | To the Memory of | THOMAS CROWTHER, | of Hunslet Carr, who departed | this Life November 26th 1846 | Aged 31 Years. |

Hi Boo,
I have looked everywhere for a transcription or a better image, to no avail.

The stone is at St Mary's Church, Middleton, Leeds.
