Armed Forces / Galloway Gazette 1916
« on: Wednesday 12 August 20 12:56 BST (UK)  »
I saw an article regarding John McConchie who served with the Army in NZ but when he came back to the UK they discovered that he had put the incorrect DOB & was discharged.  He was born 1857 but I think he said it was 1875 so they would think he was younger.

I can't find the article now, can anyone help please?

The family name was changed between the census 1861 & 1871, from DYKER to DYER is there any way of finding out why?

My nephew has sent me this photo of what he thinks was a medal belonging  to his grandfather. I don't think I have ever seen it before. Is it a medal relating to the military?

World War Two / John Dyer
« on: Monday 19 November 18 14:54 GMT (UK)  »
My father said he was in the Merchant Navy 1942 - 1946, but I have just found some papers that say royal Navy.  I think he was a rear gunner.   I was trying to find what ships he was on. On the sheet I've found it has - "Glendower", "Wellesley" would these be in inverted commas as they were training ships?  Then I have President 111; Drake; Drake1V; Drake. I looked on the War record site but could find nothing. Are you able to see where these ships would have sailed & any info on them at all
My granddaughter is doing a project for uni & wanted some information.  Do you know how to find what war medals he should have?
Thank you

Graveyards and Gravestones / Kirkmabreck Graveyard
« on: Saturday 09 June 18 11:09 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the records of who is buried in the old Kirkmabreck graveyard. The record I saw when I was in Creetown said that my ancestor Ebenezer Maxwell was buried in plot 98 but when we looked there it was someone else.   Can I get a list of all the people buried in that graveyard from somewhere, I managed to get some names from the headstones but they were very hard to read. Also can I see who is buried in the new graveyard to see where the other members of the family are buried. They died in Creetown, Dumfries & Galloway.   When did people start to be cremated instead of buried?

Added -
I now have a list of people buried in the old graveyard.
