The Lighter Side / Attention everyone with ancestors from London....

According to this, 'ultra modern' technology has been used to give the best guess at who Jack the Ripper might have been and what he might have been like (again!)

Stand by with your family albums - this could shake the very foundations (I don't think!)   ;) ;)

Completed Census Requests / Re: 19th century MPs

This might sound stupid and obvious, but I once had cause to contact the House of Commons on a similar query (it was historical research, not family) and they were remarkably helpful!  Drop them a line - I think they enjoy something that isn't a complaint, from time to time!

The Lighter Side / Re: GR is this a record?
« on: Friday 17 November 06 18:46 GMT (UK)  »
I sometimes find it difficult to compose myself to reply to contacts from GR - I get in from work, dash up to the computer to see what's landed in the inbox - get rid of spam, check ebay watched items...print off anything to do with the Band - which has to take priority over everything else, as it's thir money i'm playing with.  By the time I've done all that, said a quick hello to husband and dog, caught up on some of my outstanding paperwork, i've usually had a couple of gin and tonics or glasses of wine and think...oh, I'll reply to that tomorrow, so i click it as 'Keep As New'.  Sadly, it can sometimes take me a little while to reply, but never 14 months!!!

Hi - I've never done this before - any chance of tidying him up - bless him - he was wounded in the First World War and had a shattered elbow for the rest of his life - didn't stop him working as a miner, though!

Durham / Re: Family names from Weardale
« on: Sunday 08 October 06 22:26 BST (UK)  »
I've just started on my husband's side of the family and have found his gg g/f was called Featherstone Watson - he was born in ap 1830 in Pately Bridge, but I noticed that, astonishingly, there was another Featherstone watson born abt 1832 in Stanhope.  I'm sure there must be a link here somewhere - can't be TWO Featherstone Watsons, surely!

(He - ie the ggg/f - had a brother called Brown Watson - and no father appears, as far back as 1841 - old Nancy, mother of Brown and Featherstone calls herself a widow throughout!)  I'm dubious myself!
